Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 2015 U.S. Open was played at a course that had opened just eight years prior. What was the name of this course located on Puget Sound in the state of Washington?

Answer: Chambers Bay

There was some controversy when Chambers Bay was selected to host the 2015 U.S. Open as many people felt that the course had not been open long enough to warrant hosting such a major event. The course was designed in the style of a British links course. Interestingly, there is only one tree found on the whole course.
2. Depending on the round of the 2015 U.S. Open, two holes switched between being par fours and par fives. Which two holes, named Puget Sound and Tahoma, were these?

Answer: 1 and 18

The first hole was a par four during rounds one, three and four and was a par five during round two whereas the 18th hole was a par five during rounds one, three, and four and was a par four during round two. In addition to these holes changing the score to par, the yardage of the course itself varied between rounds from 7,300 yards to 7,700 yards.
3. The field of the 2015 U.S. Open contained 36 players from Europe. Which Swedish player shot a five under par 65 to tie for the lead after one round?

Answer: Henrik Stenson

Stenson was tied with Dustin Johnson of the United States after the first round. In total there were eleven players within three shots of the leaders after round one. In 2013 Stenson became the first player to win the PGA FedEx Cup and the European Tour Race to Dubai in the same season.
4. After 36 holes of the 2015 U.S. Open two players were in the lead at five under par. Which golfer, who shares his first name with a New York Knicks center and his last name with a different New York Knicks center, shot a 66 and 69 in the first two rounds to tie for the lead at the halfway point?

Answer: Patrick Reed

Patrick Reed was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1990 and he joined the PGA Tour in 2011. In 2014 Reed became the youngest winner of the WGC-Cadillac Championship in Miami, Florida. The New York Knicks centers hinted at in the question were Patrick Ewing and Willis Reed.
5. The field of the 2015 U.S. Open featured 13 former winners of the event. Which winner of the event in 2011 had the best finish of these 13 individuals by finishing ninth after shooting a 66 in the final round?

Answer: Rory McIlroy

Of the answer choices only Rory McIlroy made the cut. McIlroy finished the tournament at even par. Three-time champion of the U.S. Open Tiger Woods had one of his worst performances at a major as he missed the cut with a score of +16 after two rounds.
6. During the third round of the 2015 U.S. Open one player in particular had a fantastic round in spite of having symptoms of vertigo during the tournament. Who was this Australian player, that was tied for the lead after three rounds?

Answer: Jason Day

At several times during the tournament Jason Day had to stop playing to rest and even lay down. Prior to the 2015 U.S. Open Jason Day's best finish at the event was second which he achieved in 2011 and 2013. Day finished the 2015 U.S. Open with a disappointing +4 in the final round to close at even par.
7. Possibly the best run of the 2015 U.S. Open came from a South African player who shot a +7 in the first round. Who was this player, that shot 11 under par over his last three rounds and ended the tournament tied for second place?

Answer: Louis Oosthuizen

Oosthuizen had three early bogeys during his final round and going into the last nine holes he was eight shots off the lead. He birdied six of the final seven holes to finish just one stroke back. Oosthuizen completed his last three rounds in 199 shots which tied a U.S. Open record as did his 29 on the back nine of the final round.
8. The low round of the 2015 U.S. Open came in the final round when a player shot 64 (-6). Who was this player, that was also the first Australian to win the Masters when he did so in 2013?

Answer: Adam Scott

After three rounds of the 2015 U.S. Open Adam Scott was seven shots off of the lead. During his final round he had no holes over par and he finished just two strokes back of the winner. Scott may be best known for his heartbreaking defeat at the 2012 Open Championship when he lost after having a four stroke lead with just four holes to play.
9. On the 72nd and final hole of the 2015 U.S. Open a player had a 12 foot eagle putt that would have won the tournament. Surprisingly this player ended up three-putting and finishing in second place. Who was the player that suffered defeat in such an agonizing way?

Answer: Dustin Johnson

Johnson's first putt from 12 feet went about three feet past the hole and then his next putt from there missed as well. Johnson's best round of the 2015 U.S. Open was the first round when he shot five under par. This tournament was Johnson's 25th time participating in a golf major and the second time he'd finished in second place.
10. The 2015 U.S. Open was won by Jordan Spieth in spite of his uncharacteristic finish to the tournament. How did Spieth finish his last three holes en route to victory?

Answer: Birdie, Dougle Bogey, Birdie

With just two holes remaining Spieth had a three stroke lead. Similar to Dustin Johnson on the 18th hole, Spieth three-putted the 17th hole while Johnson birdied it to even their scores. Spieth's birdie on the 18th hole gave him his second major of the year after he won the Masters two months earlier. Had Johnson and Spieth been tied after 72 holes they would have played an 18 hole playoff on Monday.
