Since 1965 ABC has broadcasted the Indianapolis 500 as well as other races in the IndyCar Series and the Indy Racing League. Interestingly, the Indianapolis 500 wasn't broadcast on television until 1949 because Indianapolis Motor Speedway president Tony Hulman was against it. From 1965 to 1985 the race was broadcast on ABC via tape delay rather than a live feed.

In 2015, eleven total racers qualified with speeds over 225 miles per hour. Dixon was the fastest. Scott Dixon won the Indianapolis 500 in 2008 when he also had pole position. In 2008 and 2013 Dixon was declared New Zealand's Sportsman of the Year at the Halberg Awards. While Dixon lead for 84 laps and ran a solid race he ended up finishing in fourth place.

Juan Pablo Montoya won the 2000 Indianapolis 500 despite it being the first time he participated in the race and he did not compete in the race again until 2014.
