Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which cyclist wore the red leader's jersey after the stage one team time trial in Nimes?

Answer: Dennis Rohan, BMC Racing

BMC dominated the time trial leading Rohan to a stage victory and the red jersey. He is the first Australian to wear red since Michael Matthews in 2014. Froome's Team Sky came in fourth place, but overall Froome was a mere nine seconds behind in the overall standings. Nibali finished in 50th place, thirty-one seconds behind. Fabian Cancellara retired at the end of the 2016 racing season and did not participate in this year's Vuelta.
2. Which brothers rode together in the 2017 Vuelta a España?

Answer: Adam and Simon Yates, Orica-Scott

The Quintana brothers and the Sagan brothers did not participate in the 2017 Vuelta. Andy and Frank Schleck are both retired. The Yates twins were the only brothers participating in the race. Last year Adam won the white jersey for best young rider in the 2016 Tour de France, Simon took the honor as best young rider in the 2017 Tour de France. Simon Yates finished the Vuelta in 50th place; Adam finished in 100th place.
3. Where was Chris Froome, Team Sky, born?

Answer: Nairobi, Kenya

Froome was born in Nairobi, Kenya in 1985 to British parents, Jane and Clive Froome. His maternal grandparents emigrated from Tetbury, England to Kenya to run a crop farm. His father represented England as a field hockey player.
4. Who won the first sprint finish on stage two of the Vuelta from Nimes to Gruissan?

Answer: Yves Lampaert, Quickstep

Trentin finished second, Blythe third in the sprint to the line. Mark Cavendish did not participate in the 2017 Vuelta, having crashed out and broken his shoulder blade in the fourth stage of the 2017 Tour de France.
5. Which team stomped their authority on the stage nine climb up Puig Llorença, setting up a lead out train for their team leader?

Answer: Team Sky

Team Sky set a blistering pace to overtake the breakaway group, shutting down attacks against Froome, who went full gas on the final ascent, crossing the finish line four seconds ahead of Esteban Chaves (Orica-Scott). Despite having just won the Tour de France, this was Froome's first Grand Tour stage victory of the year. Michael Woods (Cannondale-Drapac) crossed one second further back.

A still combative Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo) finished in sixth place, twelve seconds behind Froome.
6. Which cyclist, in second place overall, suffered two crashes and a puncture but stoically remounted after each mishap and finished stage six - a brutal day of five categorized climbs?

Answer: Tejay van Garderen, BMC Racing

It was a tough day in the saddle for van Garderen, but to his credit he didn't throw in the towel. He crossed the finish line only forty-six seconds behind the winner, Tomasz Marczynski, but that was enough to drop his overall position from second to fourth place. By the time they reached Madrid, the crashes had taken their toll and van Garderen ended in tenth place overall.
7. Which French rider was sent home by his team for not following the race plan?

Answer: Warren Barguil, Team Sunweb

In a highly unusual move, twenty-five year old Barguil, in thirteenth place overall after seven stages, was banished by Team Sunweb despite being the team's highest placed rider, one spot above designated leader Wilco Kelderman. (Barguil had already committed to leaving Sunweb at the end of the season to join French team, Fortuneo-Oscarom). Kelderman went on to finish in fourth place overall, just shy of the podium in Madrid, and one place above Alberto Contador, riding his Grand Tour swan song.
8. Who was the break-out "best young rider" in the 2017 Vuelta who took that distinction from Adam Yates on stage eleven, the climb to Calar Alto, and retained it all the way to Madrid?

Answer: Miguel Ángel López, Astana

Twenty-three year old Columbian cyclist Miguel Ángel López (Astana) impressively won stage 15 at the summit of the Alto Hoya, leaving the chasers and pelaton in his dust, and overtaking Adam Yates in the final kilometres before the finish line. Commentators Paul Sherwin and Bob Roll were profuse in their praise and predicted great things from this young cyclist. Lopez won stages eleven and fifteen and came in eighth in Madrid. Rosen finished 26th, Moscon 27th and Soler 48th.
9. Who won the stage sixteen individual time trial?

Answer: Chris Froome, Team Sky

Riding in the red jersey, race leader Chris Froome edged out Wilco Kelderman (Team Sunweb) by twenty-nine seconds with Vincenzo Nibali in third place, fifty-seven seconds behind. With an impressive last hurrah in the time trial, Contador moved up an astonishing four spots, from ninth to fifth place. With the win, Froome extended his time lead over his rivals for the red jersey in Madrid.
10. Who won the 2017 Vuelta a España?

Answer: Chris Froome, Team Sky

Chris Froome also won the white combined jersey and the green points jersey...along with taking his first Vuelta a España red....a virtual trifecta for him this year in the Vuelta. He became the first cyclist to win both the yellow Tour de France jersey and the red Vuelta jersey in the same year since Bernard Hinault in 1978. Prior to that, back to back Grand Tour wins in the same year had been achieved only by the great French cyclist Jacques Anquetil in 1963.
