Carlton Blues, Essendon Bombers, Collingwood Magpies and Richmond Tigers are all Melbourne-based members of the Australian Football League (formerly known as the Victorian Football League). In 2000, Essendon Bombers defeated Melbourne Demons in the grand final to win their sixteenth title.

2. The Stanley Cup, the most prestigious trophy in North American ice hockey, was won for the 24th time in 1993 by which team?

Answer: Montreal Canadiens

The Canadiens defeated the Los Angeles Kings 4-1 in the 1992-93 finals series to win their 24th title. Their nearest rivals at the time, the Maple Leafs, had only won 13 (their 13th was in 1967).

Answer: Real Madrid

Real won the first-ever European Champions Cup in 1956, defeating French club Stade de Reims in the final. They won the next four editions as well, and a sixth in 1966. They then endured a long drought before enjoying another period of glory in the late 1990s/early 2000s, with three successes between 1998 and 2002 (by which time the European Champions Cup had become the European Champions League).

Answer: Green Bay Packers

The Packers were founded in Green Bay, Wisconsin, 1919, and joined the NFL in 1921. They won their first title in 1929, winning nine crowns in total prior to the Superbowl era. They won the first two Superbowls in the late 1960s, and added further crowns in Superbowls XXXI and XLV, with victory over the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers respectively.

5. The Challenge Cup is the oldest and most prestigious trophy in Rugby League in the United Kingdom. Which team won the cup in 2013?

Answer: Wigan

Wigan dominated this competition in the late 1980s/early 1990s, winning seven straight tournaments at one point. Although they received more of a challenge from the likes of Warrington and St Helens in the early 21st century, they won it for the 19th time in 2013, beating Hull in the final at Wembley Stadium. The first Challenge Cup was played in 1897 (next best at that time was St Helens, who'd won their 12th Challenge Cup in 2008).

The Yankees had to wait until 1923 before they won their first World Series, but that triggered off an era of domination. They won four straight between 1936 and 1939, and bettered that with five-in-a-row between 1949 and 1953. In 2009, they defeated the Philadelphia Phillies to win their 27th Series -- next best at that time were the St Louis Cardinals with 10 WS titles.

Kerry won their first title in 1903 and have kept on winning ever since. Between 1929 and 1941, they were champions on no fewer than eight occasions. Another period of domination came between 1978 and 1986, when they won seven out of a possible nine titles. Their 36th success came in 2009 when they defeated Cork in the final.

Answer: Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics were a founder member of the NBA in 1946 and won their first championship in 1957. In a period of unparalleled dominance, they won the title 11 times in 13 years between 1957 and 1969. After winning their 16th title in 1986, they endured a period of unaccustomed famine before defeating the LA Lakers to win number 17 in 2008. Next best at that time were the Lakers, with 14 wins.

Answer: Toronto Argonauts

The Grey Cup actually precedes the Canadian Football League by some 49 years, first being contested in 1909. The Argonauts have been playing football since 1873, and won their first Grey Cup in 1914, defeating the University of Toronto. Their 16th victory came in 2012 with a win over the Calgary Stampeders. Next best, at that time, were the Edmonton Eskimos with 13 wins.

Answer: UCLA

The UCLA Bruins weren't known for their prowess on the basketball court until John Wooden took over as head coach in 1948. In 27 years at the helm, Wooden never had a losing record, winning 10 NCAA titles, including seven-in-a-row between 1967 and 1973. After his retirement the titles dried up, but they did secure championship number 11 in 1995 with victory over Arkansas. Nexty best, at that time, were Kentucky and Indiana with five wins each.
