Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2006, the Patriots played in Gillette Stadium, but what company owned the rights to the name and then lost it when they went bankrupt?

Answer: CMGI

CMGI.com had bought the rights to the name, but before a Patriots game was ever played there, they changed the name to Gillette. There were a few concerts and a few Revolution games played there before the name was changed.
2. In what season did the Patriots make their first Super Bowl appearance?

Answer: 1985

While the Pats did make the Super Bowl in all of these years except for 1976 (where a controversial call helped Oakland win in the AFC Championship), the first one was in the 1985, where they got smoked by the Super Bowl shuffling Bears.
3. What rule allowed the Patriots continue their unbelievable playoff win against the Raiders in 2001?

Answer: The Tuck Rule

Brady pulled the ball down as he was being hit, which provided the call. It was a strange call, but it's a strange rule. Interesting note: If it had happened two plays before, the game would have ended because the Patriots had no timeouts left and would not have been able to challenge the call.
4. Who was the MVP of Super Bowl XXXI, where the Pats lost to Green Bay?

Answer: Desmond Howard

The Pats scored a touchdown to make the game close, but on the ensuing kickoff, Howard took it the distance to kill the momentum and put the game away.
5. What happened in a preseason game at Boston College that forced fans on to the field with the Patriots?

Answer: The stands caught on fire

The stands caught on fire and forced everyone down onto the field with the two teams. At least no one was hurt.
6. Going into the 2006 playoffs, the Patriots had 4 wide receivers that went to the same school. Jabar Gaffney, Chad Jackson, Kelvin Kight, and Reche Caldwell. What school was it?

Answer: Florida

Not only did they have 4 WR's from Florida, but not one of them was on the team in 2005. Jackson and Kight were both first year players, and Caldwell and Gaffney were both veteran free agent signings.
7. Laurence Maroney shared running duties in 2006 with Corey Dillon, but what NFL back did he split carries with in college at Minnesota?

Answer: Marion Barber

Ironically, both backs split time in college as well. Certainly their experience in college has helped them prepare for this in the pros.
8. What year were the Patriots instated into the AFL?

Answer: 1960

They played in the AFL as the Boston Patriots until the merger, and changed their name in 1971.
9. Which Patriot set a record for the youngest player to win the Super Bowl MVP?

Answer: Tom Brady

He won the award when he was 24, in Super Bowl XXXVI against the St. Louis Rams.
10. In 2006, Troy Brown became the Patriots all-time leading receiver. Who had held the record before he broke it?

Answer: Stanley Morgan

Margan had 534 catches, and Troy Brown finished the season with 557. He was cut twice before he made the full rotation. Drafted in '93 in the 8th round out of Marshall.
