After playing 189 games and kicking 427 goals for Hawthorn from 1982 to 1992 (he failed to play a senior game with the Hawks in 1993 due to injury), Brereton crossed to Sydney for one season in 1994, where he played seven matches and booted seven goals.

Injury and suspension marred his year with the Swans, however he managed to put his battle wearied body through one more season with Collingwood in 1995, where he played some solid football, notching up 15 games and 30 goals. A flamboyant footballer, Brereton was one of the greatest centre half-forward's of all time, playing in five premierships with Hawthorn.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s he became one of the most respected commentators in the game.

An all time great of the game. He was a Centre Half Back - Centre Half Forward who played 321 games for Footscray, kicking 364 goals between 1951 and 1970. He won Footscray's 'Best and Fairest' on five occasions: 1954, 1957-59 and 1961. He coached Footscray from 1957-66 and 1969-71.

As a player he participated in their only premiership in 1954 under Captain-Coach Charlie Sutton. Because of his extraordinary skill and all round ability he was dubbed 'Mr Football' by Ron Barrassi, another Legend of the game.

After a long battle with prostate cancer he died in 1995.
