Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 1972 Miami Dolphins went a perfect 14-0 in the season. Bob Griese and Earl Morrall had the arms for the team. Who had the hands and led the team in receiving yardage in the season?

Answer: Paul Warfield

Warfield caught only 29 passes for 606 yards. Seemingly a low count, the Dolphins had two 1000-yard rushers in Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris, then Jim Kiick rushed for another 521 yards, so the focus of the team was on the ground.
2. In 1966, Cowboy QB Don Merideth reached his career high of 2805 passing yards. Which receiver led the team and caught 1232 of those yards?

Answer: Bob Hayes

Hayes had more than double the yardage of the others, and caught 64 balls in the season. Hayes played 10 of his 11 seasons with the star on his helmet, then retired as a 49er in 1975.
3. Houston QB Warren Moon was the first player in history to complete 400 passes in a season. He threw 404 in 1991. Which receiver was on the other end of his passes the most times in that season?

Answer: Haywood Jeffires

Haywood caught exactly 100 passes in the season, a career high for him. His 1181 yards was also a career high. Moon threw for 4690 yards with a TD/INT ratio of 23-21. He was an amazing 404-for-655 resulting in a 61.7% completion rate.
4. In 1995, San Francisco 49er Jerry Rice set a single-season record for catching 1848 yards from the air in the season. Two quarterbacks shared that yardage with Rice. One QB was Steve Young. Who was the other?

Answer: Elvis Grbac

The others were not rostered by the 49ers in 1995. Young threw for 3200 yards while Grbac had 1469 passing yards. Rice caught 122 passes in the season along with 15 touchdowns.
5. In 1947, Cleveland Brown receiver Mac Speedie set a record for catching the first 99-yard touchdown pass. Who threw the ball?

Answer: Otto Graham

Graham threw for 2753 yards with 25 touchdowns in 1947. Both Graham and Speedie were in their second season with the Browns, and Speedie set career highs with both 1146 receiving yards and 67 receptions. The Browns went all the way and were the 1947 AAFC Champions.
6. Dan Marino was the first QB to throw over 5000 yards in a season, when he set a record with his 5084 yards in 1984. Which Dolphin led the team in receiving yardage and receptions in the season?

Answer: Mark Clayton

Nicknamed the Marx Brothers, they traded the team lead throughout the season. It was Clayton who caught 73 for 1389 yards. Duper was the runner-up with 71 catches for 1306 yards. Miami went all the way to the Super Bowl, but lost to the 49ers 16-3.
7. The New York Giants won Super XLII against the Patriots. QB Eli Manning took the snaps during the season. Who led the Giants in receptions in the 2007 season?

Answer: Plaxico Burress

Welker was not a Giant. Burress caught 70 passes for 1025 yards. He caught 12 of Manning's 23 touchdown passes. Toomer was the runner-up receiver by catching 59 passes for 760 yards and three touchdowns.
8. The Green Bay Packers won Super Bowl I against the Kansas City Chiefs. QB Bart Starr led the team with his arm. Who led the Packers in receiving yards during that Super Bowl?

Answer: Max McGee

McGee had seven catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Max had only 91 receiving yards during the entire season, while Carroll Dale led the team with 876 yards, then Elijah Pitts with 460. McGee was not expected to play in the Super Bowl, and only did to replace an injured Boyd Dowler.
9. In 2007, New England QB Tom Brady set a single-season record by throwing 50 touchdown passes. Which receiver caught 23 of those?

Answer: Randy Moss

Moss' 23 touchdowns was a career high. While Randy caught 98 passes in the season, Wes Welker led the team with 112. Welker caught eight touchdown passes, Ben Watson caught six, and Vrabel had two.
