Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What type of racing are you more likely to go over 100 Kilometers an hour?

Answer: Downhill

Slalom is the slowest but most difficult type of racing because the gates are very close together. Giant Slalom or GS is faster and less turny. Super-G is one more step towards high speed because they are less gates and they are more spread apart. Downhill is the fastest race type. There are very few gates, and they are set almost in a straight line.
2. What is a parabolic ski?

Answer: A ski with sidecut

When parabolic skis came out, they were very popular because the sidecut in them made it easier to turn. Now there are rules for how much sidecut a ski can have because it was getting dangerous
3. What is a sidecut?

Answer: The ski is smaller in the middle, and fatter on the ends

Sidecut helps the ski to turn because it is smaller in the middle. The tips of the ski which are fatter touch more of the snow, and the middle part bends to touch the snow, and then the whole ski bends and it makes it easier to turn.
4. The minimum lenghth for men's slalom skis is 165cm and 14meters radius. What type of skis would you use for Slalom?

Answer: Smaller more sidecut

Slalom uses the shortest ski because the gates are closest together, and more sidecut makes it easier to turn. You need to be stronger because if you are not ready for the turn, you're going to fly around and probably crash or miss a gate.
5. What type of race would use a the longest ski?

Answer: Downhill

Slalom uses smaller skis because the speeds are less. You can have more sidecut, but in downhill you need longer skies and less sidecut, because of the high speeds you need a more stable ski.
6. If you miss a gate in any type of racing, are you automatically disqualified?

Answer: False

Anytime you miss a gate you have the chance of coming back around the gate, as if you never missed it. It is called hiking. But in slalom, if you straddle a gate (means getting the gate in between your legs) you are disqualified.
7. Atomic and Nike are two of the most popular ski companies ever to exist?

Answer: False

Nike did not make skis. Atomic is one of the most skied brands in the world.
8. Which alpine skiing company, sponsored most of the Austrian ski team?

Answer: Atomic

Atomic actually is originally from Austria, and was one of the most popular ski companies ever to exist.
9. Name the great skier that had a very bad motorcycle accident in August 2001 that almost got him out of racing.

Answer: Hermann Maier

Very bad indeed, as he almost lost both his legs. But he made an amazing comeback in January 2003.
10. In GS, SG, DH, why do you always see pros with curved poles that wrap around them?

Answer: To be more aerodynamic

A lot of average skiers use curved poles because it makes them like good skiers, but the true reason for curved poles, is that in the tuck when you brushed gates, the basket would not hook and unbalance you, and slow you down.
11. What is brushing gates?

Answer: Hitting them with your hip or arm in a controlled manner

Brushing is mostly seen in SG and DH, but it still plays a part in GS as well.
12. Where would you block a gate with your pole?

Answer: Slalom

In slalom the racers almost run over the gate. and they put guards on the poles so they can block them and not get hit in the face.
13. What are the new break-a-way style of gates made of?

Answer: Fiberglass

Since racers started to block slalom gates, the old bamboo ones were obselete. They broke too easy so they made them in fiberglass, so that they would be flexible and safe to the racer, and not in plastic because they would break in the cold.
14. In ski racing, the point is to go through a course in the fastest possible time. To do this you must go through a gate. The one that you come the closest to is called the attack gate. What do you call the one that is on the outside?

Answer: Control Gate

The control gate is to make sure that you do not go too wide in the turn. You must go through both the control gate and the attack gate to "complete" gate.
15. Where were the 2002-2003 ski world championships?

Answer: St. Moritz

The Canadian skier Melanie Turgeon won gold.
16. What is considered the toughest Downhill course by most of the skiers in the World Cup?

Answer: Kitzbühel

The Hahnenkamm races at Kitzbuhel are the highlight on the World Cup tour, and has been since it started in 1967. Everything contributes to make these competitions a huge destination during the season. The beautiful town built during middle age, the unique and treacherous "Streif" course which finishes near to the center of the city, is in front of tens of thousands of spectators.

The entire festival atmosphere that surrounds the event is often compared to the Formula One Grand Prix at Monte-Carlo.

In fact, it's one of the highest honors for downhill or slalom specialists to win those races.
17. What would you put on your skis if they have pretty bad damage on them?

Answer: P-Tex

Wax is to make your skis slide better on snow. Ptex is for repairing big scratches and holes in your base. If you have really old skis, try using candle wax on them, but not on your brand new pair of skis, because you cannot take it out once it is in.
18. What is the first step to tuning your skis?

Answer: Sharpening

Doing your edges before you wax your skis will prevent dust from sticking on your base. Cleaning takes place right before waxing. Din is how tight your binding holds your boot.
19. On the wax color code, what is the color for warm temperatures?

Answer: yellow

There are four colors in racing wax. Yellow is for warm, magenta for medium, and blue for extremely cold, and then you have the universal that one is usualy white.
20. Is it proper to iron, scrape, and then brush your skis?

Answer: Yes

Well that was a crude description of waxing skis, so it actually does good.
