Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following greats played for more than four teams in their Major League career?

Answer: Gaylord Perry

The others were all one-team players. DiMaggio and Mantle with the Yankees, and Banks played with the Cubs. Perry played for eight different teams and retired at the age of 44 in 1983. He won an American League Cy Young award in 1972 in his first season with the Indians, after being traded from the Giants.

He won the National League Cy Young Award in 1978 with the Padres, one season after being traded from Texas. Gaylord was inducted into the Hall of Fame after retiring with 314 wins.
2. In 22 seasons, how many times did multiple MVP winner Willie Mays, win 20 or more games in a season from the mound?

Answer: 0

Mays was never a pitcher. He began his career with the New York Giants (later San Francisco) in 1951, winning the Rookie of the Year award. He won two season MVP awards in 1954 and 1965. Willie retired with 660 home runs in 1973.
3. Which of the following teams finished a season with a 40-120 record in the 1960s?

Answer: New York Mets

None of the others existed in the 1960s. The New York Mets in their inaugural season in 1962, dished up a 40-120 season record under the management of Casey Stengel. Seven seasons later, they won the World Series as the 'Amazing Mets', defeating the Baltimore Orioles.
4. I appeared in only two games in my first season in 1966. The other 26 of my 27 seasons, I struck out over 100 batters each season. 11 times I led the league in strikeouts. I only played with four teams. Some feel that no-hitters were named after me. Who am I?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

The others were not pitchers, and all had died prior to 1966. The great Nolan Ryan! Enough said. Amazingly enough, Nolan never won a Cy Young award. From the Mets to the Angels, then the Astros and Rangers, Nolan dominated hitters. Eight times in his career, Ryan was in the top ten for the Cy Young voting, with his best by finishing 2nd in 1973 to the Orioles' Jim Palmer.

He retired in 1993 with 5714 career strikeouts.
5. Which of the following was a 2000 Hall of Fame inductee?

Answer: Carlton Fisk

The other three were part of the five initial inductees in 1936. Fisk, who played 24 seasons with the Red Sox and White Sox, was the 1972 American League Rookie of the Year. This was the only major award that he won in his career. He was most famous for his 1975 game six World Series home run in the bottom of the 12th inning against the Reds.

The Reds still won the series four games to three.
6. Ty Cobb was suspended from baseball for fighting with a fan in the stands during a game. His team boycotted the suspension of him, and refused to play in the following game without him. The team ownership ended up hiring any and everybody off the street to fill the roster. Which American League team did Cobb play for when this happened?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

Cobb played for the Tigers and Athletics in his career, and the others listed were all National League teams. For attacking a fan in the stands, the great Ty Cobb was suspended indefinitely by the commissioner of baseball. On May 18, 1912, the owner of the team solicited for anyone to wanted to play because the rest of the team refused to play.

The Tigers played the game with 'civilians' from age 18 to 48, lost to the Philadelphia Athletics 24-2, and saw the Athletics get 26 hits in the game. Cobb was reinstated after this game.
7. What famous manager had the nickname of 'Sparky'?

Answer: George Anderson

Alston of the Dodgers was nicknamed "Smokey". Durocher had many nicknames including "The Lip". Huggins was "Might Mite" and "Hug". George Lee "Sparky" Anderson managed from 1970-1995 with the Reds and the Tigers. He won four National League pennants including two World Series, and one World Series in the American League. Upon retirement in 1995, he was number three in career wins with 2194 wins.

He won two Manager of the Year awards with Detroit also.
8. Who won the American League Cy Young award in 2002?

Answer: Barry Zito

The others listed never won a Cy Young award, and had retired at least 30 years earlier. Zito with the Athletics was remarkable in his 3rd season. He threw a 23-5 record along with an ERA of .275. He won the Cy Young award over Boston's Pedro Martinez and Derek Lowe.
9. Which of the following Hall of Famers wore the number 21 in the 1960s and 1970s for the Pittsburgh Pirates?

Answer: Roberto Clemente

The others retired in the 1940s. Clemente spent his entire career with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1955-1972. He was killed two months after the 1972 season in a humanitarian aircraft relief mission. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame the following year in 1973.
10. Which of the following never hit 70 home runs in a season?

Answer: Babe Ruth

McGwire hit 70 home runs in 1998 with Cardinals, and Barry Bonds hit 73 in 2001 with the Giants. Babe Ruth hit 60 big ones in 1927, his season high.
