Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This 1968 Tiger pitcher was the first to win 30 games in a season since Dizzy Dean did it in the 1930s. Who was this 1968 MVP and Cy Young winner?

Answer: Denny McLain

McLain went 31-6 in 1968, and went all the way against the Cardinals in the World Series. Tiger pitcher Mickey Lolich won the 1968 series MVP by winning three games. In 1969, McLain tied for the Cy Young award with Lolich.
2. This Kansas City Royal won the Rookie of the Year award, and later went on to manage the Reds to a World Series crown. Who is he?

Answer: Lou Piniella

Piniella played for 18 seasons and retired in 1984. He took the helm of the Yankees in 1986, then the World Champion Reds in 1990. He also managed the Mariners, Rays, and Cubs. Lou won the Manager of the Year award with the Mariners in 1995 and 2001.
3. From 1980-1985, this pitcher won the Rolaids Relief award five times. Who was this Kansas City Royal?

Answer: Dan Quisenberry

10 of Dan's 12 seasons were in a Royals uniform. He was a Cy Young award runner-up in 1983 and 1984 to La Marr Hoyt of the White Sox, and Willie Hernandez of the Tigers, respectively. Sandwiching those seasons in 1982 and 1985, Quisenberry finished third in the Cy Young voting.
4. This Royals pitcher won two Cy Young awards in his career, one in 1985, then the other in 1989. Who is it?

Answer: Bret Saberhagen

Saberhagen played for 16 seasons. He also played with the Mets and the Red Sox. His 1985 Cy Young award came over Ron Guidry of the Yankees. In 1989, he won it over Dave Stewart and Mike Moore of Oakland.
5. This 11-season third baseman retired in 1920, but not before getting a taste of managing in the Federal League. He would later take the Pirates, Cardinals, and Reds to World Series play. Who is this Hall of Famer?

Answer: Bill McKechnie

In addition to his World Series, Bill managed the Newark Pepper of the Federal League, and also the Boston Braves. McKechnie's credits were a 1925 Pirate World Series title, 1928 Cardinals NL pennant, the 1939 Reds NL pennant, and the 1940 Reds World Series crown. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1962, and died in 1965 at the age of 79.
6. This was the second pitcher in baseball history to throw for a Triple Crown. He did it in 1884 with the Providence Grays of the National League. Who is this Hall of Fame pitcher?

Answer: Charley Radbourn

Nicknamed "Old Hoss", Radbourn went 48-25 in 1883 for the Grays' third place finish. He exploded the next season by going 59-12, helping the Grays to a 10.5 game lead over the Boston Braves for the pennant. Charley was inducted into the Hall in 1939. The first pitcher to throw a Triple Crown was Tommy Bond of the NL Boston Red Caps in 1877.
7. Batting for two Triple Crowns and winning two National League MVPs, this Hall of Fame great was inducted into the hall in 1942. Who was this second baseman?

Answer: Rogers Hornsby

12 of Rogers' 23 seasons were in St. Louis, and that is where he made a name for himself. His Triple Crowns came in 1922 and 1925. Neither one would lead the Cardinals to a World Series. His MVPs came in 1925 and 1929, the latter taking his Cubs to the World Series against the Philadelphia Athletics, in which the Cubs lost. Three times he batted over .400 in a full season, and retired with an amazing .358 career average, second only to Ty Cobb.
8. This 1969 Hall of Fame inductee's career was cut short in an automobile accident. He won the NL MVP in 1951, 1953, and 1955. Who was this Dodger catcher?

Answer: Roy Campanella

The crash in 1957 ended Roy's career and put him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. John Roseboro took over the catching duties, but it would never be the same until Mike Piazza came along in 1992. In 10 seasons, Campanella hit 242 home runs. Roy died in 1993.
9. The final batting Triple Crown of the 20th century went to this Boston Red Sox outfielder. Who was it that got the triple in 1967?

Answer: Carl Yastrzemski

Strangely enough, with only one batting Triple Crown being hit in the 1950s (Mickey Mantle 1956), Yastrzemski encored Frank Robinson from the 1966 season, who hit one with the Orioles. Yaz was a 23-season career Bostonian and retired in 1983. Carl was also the 1967 American League MVP. If the Cardinals would not have defeated the Red Sox in the 1967 World Series, Carl would have been a shoe-in for the MVP with his .400 batting average and three home runs. Cardinal pitcher Bob Gibson took the series MVP award after a four games to three St. Louis win.
10. For nine seasons, this 1997 Rookie of the Year played with the Boston Red Sox. In 2007, he found himself wearing Dodger Blue. Who was this shortstop-first baseman?

Answer: Nomar Garciaparra

To top off his 1997 rookie award, Garciaparra was the runner-up MVP in 1998 to Juan Gonzalez of the Rangers. In 2000, he batted .372 for Boston, winning his second consecutive AL batting title.
