1. During the 20th century, did the Wildcats ever win a National Championship?

Answer: No

The team only won a single conference championship during the 20th century, sharing the PAC-10 title in 1998 with the UCLA Bruins.
The Wildcats joined the Pac-10 in 1978. Having played in the WAC(1962-77) and the Border Conference (1931-60). They were independent of a conference prior to that, but still could not muster a national championship.
2. Who was the first coach in school history to coach at least one full season and win every single game he coached in?

Answer: Leslie Gillett

Gillett coached a single season in 1902 and finished with a 5-0 record. Forbes went 1-1-1 in Arizona's first football season (1899). Doherty coached just two seasons (1957-58) compiling a 4-15-1 record and Hanwitz posted a 1-6 record in 2003 taking over in mid-season for the fired John Mackovic.

The team picked up a 22-5 victory over Tucson to close out its inaugural season. Coach Stewart Forbes finished his coaching career with a 1-1-1 record. He was replaced by William Skinner just prior to the 1900 season.

In 1903, the Wildcats coached by Orin A. Kates, completed the school's second straight unbeaten season. They posted two victories, both over the Tucson Indians. They opened the season with a 28-0 victory, and closed the season with a 21-10 victory. Both were home games.
5. What was the first conference that Arizona ever played in?

Answer: Border

They team competed in the Border Conference from 1931-1960. They spent the 1961 season as an independent and then joined the WAC in 1962. They were members of the WAC until joining the PAC-10 in 1978. From 1899-1929 the team was an independent as well.
6. Did Arizona have a team in 1943?

Answer: No

In 1943, and again in 1944, the season was lost due to WWII. The 1918 season was also cancelled due to WWI.
7. The first bowl game in school history was the 1921 Christmas Bowl. What school did the Wildcats play in that game?

Answer: Centre

Arizona fell to Centre 38-0 in that game. Centre actually played in two bowl games that season. They won the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 28, and then fell in the Dixie Bowl 22-14 to Texas A&M. That season also included the most lopsided game in school history when they beat the New Mexico Military 110-0.

The Christmas Bowl was only played three times throughout the 20th century. In 1921, it was Arizona v. Centre. In 1922, West Virginia beat Gonzaga 21-13, and in 1977 Maryland beat Minnesota 17-7.
8. How did Arizona receive its nickname the Wildcats?

Answer: Student vote

It was Bill Henry, an LA Times columnist that wrote, "The Arizona men showed the fight of wildcats", after covering a game in 1914. Henry watched Arizona play Occidental, which was ironically the only time that the team lost all season, falling 14-0. The student body then voted on the name later that year, and it has stuck since then.
9. Which 2005 New England Patriot was a two-time All-American when he was at Arizona?

Answer: Tedy Bruschi

Bruschi won three Super Bowls (2005, 2004 & 2002) in a four-year span in New England. During his time at Arizona, Bruschi was named an All-American as a defensive lineman, he went on to become an All-Pro middle linebacker in the NFL.
10. In 1999, when Dennis Northcutt was named an All-American, what position was he listed at?

Answer: All-purpose

Northcutt was named an All-American due to both his pass catching and his return skills. While at Arizona (1996-99) he led the team in receptions for three straight years, and also crossed the 1,000 yard receiving mark in his final season (1999) when he caught 88 passes for 1,422 yards.
