1. Arkansas State University was founded in 1909 in the town of Jonesboro, Arkansas. However, the school did not earn an NCAA division 1A ranking until the 1990 season. Did the team post a winning record that season?

In 1990, the team posted a 3-7-1 record. The following season the team posted a 1-10 record. In the 1992-94 seasons the team posted a combined 5-27-1 record. Finally in the 1995 season the team posted a 6-5 record. That was the last success that the team saw for the rest of the 20th century.

2. Did ASU play in any bowl games during the 20th century?

Answer: Yes

Starting in 1911 when the football team made its debut, the team never managed to earn a bowl bid until they finally made three consecutive Pecan Bowl appearances for the 1967, 1968, and 1969 seasons.

3. From 1993-95, and again from 1999-2000, the team played in which conference?

Answer: Big West

From 1990-92 the team was an independent. Then in 1993 the team joined the Big West Conference. When the school left the conference in 1998, the team returned to independent status remaining as such until returning to the Big West for two seasons starting in 1999. In 2001 the team joined the Sun Belt Conference.

4. What was their first nickname in school history?

Answer: Aggies

In 1911, the school was known as the Aggies, because it was an agricultural school. The name changed to the Gorrillas in 1925, which became the Warriors in 1930, and eventually a name that stuck (Indians) their debut in 1931.

5. What school was the biggest ASU rival?

Answer: Memphis State

The two teams began playing the 'paint bucket' series in 1955. The winner of the annual ASU-MSU game received buckets of paint and paint brushes and was allowed to do what they would with an area of the other school's campus.

6. Bill Bergey set a school career tackle record when he graduated in 1969. What round of the NFL draft was he selected in following his stellar career?

Answer: 2nd

Bergey had 436 tackles which was an 11.8 per game average for his career at ASU. Bergey was a second round draft pick of the Cincinnati Bengals and played a 12-year career with the Philadelphia Eagles.

7. Which 11-year ASU coach was credited with inventing the end-around?

Answer: Larry Lacewell

Each year Lacewell would pick out his fastest lineman to run the end-around, otherwise known as the fumblerooski. Lacewell ran this play two or three times a season, however, the most important fumblerooski in ASU history was during the 1987 division 1-AA playoffs. Ken Nelson scored on a 30-yard fumblerooski to put ASU up 35-32 with a minute left in the game against Jackson State. That touchdown helped ASU to advance all the way to the third round of the playoffs.

8. ASU's first All-American was Richie Woit in 1953. The last Division 1AA All-American for ASU was Charlie Frederick in 1987. How many ASU players earned All-American status from 1990 to the end of the century in Division 1A?

Answer: 0

14 ASU players (three of them did it twice) earned All-American status during the 20th century. However, none of them did it while the school was playing in division 1A.

9. Prior to the opening of Indian Stadium in 1974, what stadium did ASU play its home games in?

Answer: Kays Stadium

When Indian Stadium opened in 1974, it could only seat 16,343 fans. In the early 1980s the stadium was renovated to hold 30,708 people.

10. The school record for touchdowns in a single game was once 7. Clifton Keller was the first to do it. Who was the second?

Answer: Steve Burks

Keller scored 7 TDs against Central Arkansas on Nov. 2, 1917. Burks scored his seven against Abilene Christian on Sept. 8, 1973.
