Vanessa Atler tried out for a spot on the 2000 Olympic team, but did not make it. At an interview she said that her heart just wasn't in it. Shannon Miller and Jaycie Phelps also went out for the team but didn't make it due to injuries.

The first time she met him was in 1976 at the American Cup competition. They both won the all-around gold medal in that competition, and had to kiss for a picture. Stefu died in a freak drowning accident and Nadia moved in with Bart and they fell in love.

Among many other accomplished teams and gymnasts, he also coached the United States women's gold medal winning team at the 1996 Olympic games.
