Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which American League team had the best record in the Majors at the All-Star break?

Answer: Yankees

In another seemingly well-balanced season, only two teams had a record over .600. They Yankees led baseball with their 56-32 record, a .636 win percentage. The Yankees also had the best home record of 28-13. The Rays were the other team with a .614 average. The other teams listed were in the cellar of their respective division.
2. If the season had ended at the break, who would have just missed out batting for the Triple Crown?

Answer: Miguel Cabrera

Cabrera was in his third season with Detroit after playing five with the Marlins. Miguel was tied in batting (.346), two home runs out of the league lead, and led the league in RBIs.
3. By the time the season reached the All-Star break, four teams had dumped their manager and hired a new one. In the AL it was Baltimore and Kansas City. In the National League it was the Marlins and which other team?

Answer: Diamondbacks

Arizona got rid of A.J. Hinch and hired Kirk Gibson 10 days prior to the break. It was Gibson's first managerial appearance. The Marlins gave Fredi Gonzalez his walking papers and hired Edwin Rodriguez prior to the break. Baltimore replaced David Trembley with Juan Samuel, and the Royals' Trey Hillman gave way to Ned Yost.
4. Which rookie with the Tigers was leading all other rookies with 12 home runs, 49 RBIs, and batting .342?

Answer: Brennan Boesch

The others were all in their eight season in the big leagues. Born in Santa Monica, California, Brennan was drafted by the Tigers in the third round of the 2006 Amateur Draft. He took the spot of Ryan Raburn in 2010.
5. Who led all other players by hitting the most home runs by the break?

Answer: Jose Bautista

The Blue Jay hit 24 with a slew of others tied at 22. It might appear that the 2010 season was taken over by pitching, but the advent of stricter substance testing and guidelines have curbed the ones who hold the bats. The others listed were all retired.
6. Which team led all others at the break by blasting 136 home runs?

Answer: Blue Jays

Boston had hit 118, and the rest of the league was not close. The Blue Jays and their 44-45 record at the break were being led by Jose Bautista's 24, and seven other Toronto players who were in double-figures.
7. Which team was going the wrong way, and had the worst record in baseball at the break?

Answer: Orioles

Baltimore had a record of 29-59 at the All-Star break. The Orioles had only one starter bat over .300 (Nick Markakis), and only one pitcher with four wins.
8. Not having a 20-game winner in 2009, the possibilities looked good at the break for which pitcher who had already won 15 games?

Answer: Ubaldo Jimenez

In an amazing start to the season, Jimenez went 15-1 by the break, and was on track to win 30 if he and the Rockies could continue to support him. The last 30-game winner before Ubaldo's shot was Denny McLain in 1968 with the Tigers, then Dizzy Dean of the Cardinals in 1930. All the others listed had already retired.
9. Which team hosted the 2010 All-Star game?

Answer: Angels

This was the third time Anaheim/Angel Stadium hosted the All-Star Game. The first was in 1967, the second in 1989. Across town, Dodger Stadium had hosted the game only once.
10. 2010 saw David Ortiz of the Red Sox win the Home Run Derby, and the National League win the All-Star Game 3-1. Who was voted the game's MVP?

Answer: Brian McCann

McCann was the first catcher to the the All-Star MVP since Mike Piazza in over 10 seasons. The Atlanta Brave hit a two-out three-run double in the game. It was also the first time to see the National League win in over 10 seasons, giving a National League club home field advantage for the World Series.
