Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first World Series was played in 1903, matching Boston of the AL against the three-time NL pennant winning Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates were heavily-favored to win it all, but then they were struck with pitching problems. Sam Leever who went 25-7 to lead the team, hurt his shoulder in a trapshooting tournament. They also lost starter Ed Doheny just prior to the series for what reason?

Answer: He was committed to a mental hospital

Doheny went 16-8 in the season. That left Deacon Phillippe who went 25-9 to take up the slack for the closet of empty arms. Phillippe was forced to start and throw five complete games in the series. Leever did play in limited duty, but was not effective. Boston won the series.
2. The Dodger franchise began in the American Association in 1884. In 1890, they became members of the National League. In 100 seasons of their National League endeavors, how many pitchers won 30 or more games in a season?

Answer: 1

It was in their first season in the NL in 1890 when Tom Lovett went 30-11. It was his only 30-win season of his career, and the franchise's only 30-win season also. Others came close including Joe McGinnity, Dazzy Vance, and Sandy Koufax.
3. Which World Series was the first to have more than two umpires?

Answer: 1909

The World Series began in 1903. The 1909 series pitted the Pirates against the Tigers. The series began with two umpires, but after some heated issues on whether a ball was fair or foul in game three, game four found four umpires for the game. The Pirates won that controversial game three and the series, four games to three. Four umpires were added for future series.
4. Which season saw the Yankees franchise wear their trademark pinstripe uniforms for the first time?

Answer: 1912

The new pinstripes were worn on April 11th, 1912 for the first time in the franchise's history by the then NY Highlanders vs, the Boston Red Sox.
5. In 1908, Neal Ball led the Yankees and the Major Leagues for committing 80 errors in the season. What did he accomplish in 1909 with the Indians?

Answer: He was the first shortstop to perform an unassistted triple-play

Ball was traded midseason 1909 to the Indians from the Yankees. In a total of seven seasons with the Yankees, Indians, and Red Sox, Neal committed 216 errors, averaging almost 31 errors per season. He never had 125 hits in a season, and retired with a .251 average.
6. In 2001, this pitcher could have been the third Yankee in four seasons to throw a no-hitter, but lost his bid with two outs in the ninth inning of a game. Which Yankee was this?

Answer: Mike Mussina

All the others were relievers, and none were Yankees in 2001. On September 2nd, Mussina gave up a two-strike two-out single to Carl Everett of the Red Sox, giving up his no-no, but still won the game. He went 17-11 in the season with three shutouts.
7. Who was the first manager to take three different National League teams to a pennant?

Answer: Bill McKechnie

The others listed never managed. McKechnie took the 1925 Pirates to a NL pennant, the 1928 Cardinals, then the 1939 and 1940 Cincinnati Reds to other NL pennants. McKechnie won only one World Series, in 1940 against the Tigers.
8. Which player set a record for playing over 2400 career games at first base?

Answer: Eddie Murray

Other than Gehrig who played in 2137 games at first base, the others never played that position. Murray played for the Orioles, Dodgers, Mets, Indians, and Angels over 21 seasons. He played a record 2413 games at first base in his career. Eddie retired as a member of the 3000 Game Club, the 3000 Hit Club, and the 500 Home Run Club. Murray was a 2003 Hall of Fame inductee in 2003.
9. Which American League team set a record for throwing an ERA of below 2.20 in a season, and that record stood throughout the entire 20th century?

Answer: 1918 Washington Senators

The others never existed by team name in that year, and both the Braves and Giants were National League franchises. The Senators wreaked havoc in 1918 in the AL. Led by the great Walter Johnson, the entire pitching staff averaged a 2.14 ERA in the season. Walter himself went 23-13 with a 1.27 ERA. Strangely enough, the Senators finished only third in the league behind the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians.
10. Since Major League Baseball began in 1901, who was the first pitcher to throw more than 200 walks in a season?

Answer: Bob Feller

The others all died before 1900. Feller gave up 208 walks in the 1938 season for the Indians. The 19-year old Feller went 17-11 with 240 strikeouts in that, his third season. He wouldn't break the 200-walk barrier again in his career, and went on to strikeout over 200 batters four more times. Bob led the league four consecutive seasons in shutouts, and seven consecutive seasons in strikeouts.

He threw a Triple Crown in 1940, but was still the runner-up MVP to Hank Greenberg of Tigers. He retired with a 266-162 record, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1962.
