3. Which of these franchises had former names such as the Atlantics, Grays, Grooms, and Robins?

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

The 2005 Dodger franchise began as the 1884 Atlantics. 1885 saw them as the Grays, then the Bridegrooms in 1888 before changing it to the Grooms in 1891. The franchise had gone through a bevy of names before testing the Dodger name in 1911 and 1912, abandoning it, then taking the Dodger name again in 1932 until the end of the century at least.

Their first National League title came in 1890, and their first World Series pennant was found in 1955.
4. Baseball Commissioner Ban Johnson brought the Detroit Tiger franchise from the Western League in 1900, to be a part of the new American League in 1901. What was the Detroit team's name in the new American League in 1901?

Answer: Tigers

The Tigers name graced the new Detroit AL team in 1901. After six mediocre seasons, the Tigers ran off three straight World Series appearances from 1907-1909, but lost them all. 1935 brought their first World Series crown against the Cubs.
5. The Cleveland Indians' franchise was formed from a National League team that went defunct after the 1899 season, and began in the new American League in 1901. Who was that team which set a record for losing 134 games in the 1899 season?

Answer: Cleveland Spiders

It was not the entire 1899 Spiders team that joined the American League Cleveland team in 1901. The Blues as they were known in 1901 due to their blue uniforms, had numerous picks from other National League teams. After a dismal first season in 1901, the Blues changed their name to the Bronchos, but that didn't help their cause either so they went with the name of Naps in 1903.

The Naps' name was after player-manager great, Nap Lajoie. The Indians' name came in 1915, then their first World Series title in 1920 was against the Brooklyn Robins.
6. Which National League team was once named the Orphans in the early 1900s?

Answer: Chicago Cubs

The others were all American League teams. The Cubs in 1871 were known as the White Stockings of Chicago in the National Association. Their NL team was put together to try and challenge the Cincinnati Red Stockings in 1876. The franchise became the Chicago Colts in 1890, the Orphans in 1898, then finally the Cubs in 1903.
7. Which of these Major League franchises is the only one to field a team during every season of professional baseball, dating back to the 1860s?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

The Braves' franchise began in 1869 as the Boston Red Stockings. They joined the new National League in 1876 as the Boston Red Caps, then changed their name to the Boston Beaneaters in 1883. Their first World Series championship came in 1914 as the Boston Braves.
8. This new American League team in 1901 was created from the disbanded Kansas City Packers. After the 1960 season, this team's town lost their baseball club but created a new one in 1961. Then they lost that team 11 seasons later to another city. Which team was it?

Answer: Washington Senators

The Senators who were most famous for pitching great Walter Johnson, lost the team to Minnesota to become the Twins after the 1960 season. The city rebounded immediately with a new team in 1961, joining the Los Angeles Angels in their inaugural season. After the 1971 season, Washington lost their team again, this time to become the Texas Rangers.
9. In 1962, this new National League team helped expand the league to 10 teams. Unfortunately, in their first four seasons they finished in last place by losing over 100 games in every season. Which team was this?

Answer: New York Mets

Manager Casey Stengel, being used to nothing but glory after taking the Yankees to 10 World Series, saw the Mets as the worst of the worst. Stengel was replaced as manager in his fourth season. Under the helm of Gil Hodges, the Mets won their first World Series in 1969.
10. In their first 20 seasons the Yankees foudn themselves empty-handed, not even a league championship, and had finished second only three times. Their next 40 seasons would see them appear in almost two of every three World Series. By which name did this franchise begin with in the American League in 1901?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

The other names never existed in Major League baseball. The dynasty began in 1901 with other new American League teams. After playing as the Baltimore Orioles in 1901, the franchise moved and became the New York Highlanders until 1912. The infamous pinstripe name of the Yankees came in 1913.
