Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first slugging switch-hitter to hit a home run from both sides of the plate in the same game?

Answer: Wally Schang

Schang of the Philadelphia Athletics did this in September 1916. He hit them off Allan Russell and Slim Love of the Yankees at Shibe Park. The first NL slugger to do this was Augie Galan of the Cubs in 1937.
2. Which National Leaguer hit four home runs in a game, and still saw his team lose that game?

Answer: Ed Delahanty

In July 1896, Ed was a Philadelphia Phillie outfielder where he played most of his career. Although he blasted four home runs in the game, the Chicago Colts (later Cubs) still won the game, 9-8. Bob Horner of the Braves also did this in July 1986, when his Braves lost to the Expos 11-8. Horner was the first in 90 years since Delahanty hit his four and lost.
3. Which of the following managers was the youngest to win 1000 games?

Answer: Fred Clarke

Clarke became a player-manager at the age of 24 with the Louisville Colonels in 1897. When the team folded, he and many other Colonel stars, including Honus Wagner, joined the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1900. Clarke was 35 years old in 1908 when he won this 1000th game at the helm. Mack was 48 when he won his 1000th game in 1911. Clarke retired at age 42 in 1915 with 1602 wins, the most for any manager at the time. Mack retired with 3731 wins in 1950 at the age of 87, the most of any manager at his time.
4. Pitcher Johnny Vander Meer threw two consecutive no-hitters in June 1938 against the Braves and Dodgers. This totally remarkable feat was almost duplicated by another pitcher who threw a no-hitter, then four days later, he had a no-hitter going into the ninth inning but lost his no-hitter bid. Who almost repeated Vander Meer's amazing accomplishment?

Answer: Ewell Blackwell

Blackwell was a Cincinnati Red in 1947 when he no-hit the Boston Braves 6-0. Ironically, he lost his consecutive no-hit bid against the Dodgers when Eddie Stanky singled with one out in the ninth inning. The Reds and Blackwell still won the game though. Ewell went 22-8 in the season.
5. Which National League player hit a home run in each of his four consecutive games, and that was all he hit in that season?

Answer: Ken Brett

Stranger than that, Brett was a pitcher for the Phillies in 1973. He hit his four home runs on June 9, 13, 18, and 23. Brett went 13-9 in the season, and hit only 10 home runs in his 14 seasons.
6. Carl Hubbell got the attention of every baseball fan in the 1934 All-Star game. To open the game, Hubbell set a record by striking out five consecutive batters. Even more amazing, those five batters were Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin. Which other pitcher tied Hubbell's All-Star game record by fanning five consecutive batters of his own?

Answer: Fernando Valenzuela

Fernando was a Los Angeles Dodger in 1986 when he duplicated Hubbell's All-Star game feat, but certainly not against the caliber that Hubbell faced. Fernando went 21-11 in the season, and was the Cy Young Award runner-up to Mike Scott of the Astros.
7. Which of the following teams won more total regular season games in the 1990s?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

The Braves stood out in the decade by going to five World Series, but could only manage one title in 1995. They won 925 games in the 1990s, with a season high of 106-56 in 1998. The Yankees won 851, including going 114-48 in 1998. The Red Sox took 814 in the win column, and the Reds won 809 in the decade.
8. Which of the following threw a season opening-day no-hitter?

Answer: Bob Feller

In 100 seasons of Major League Baseball, Feller was the only one to accomplish this feat. Although the others all threw no-hitters, none were on opening day. Feller threw this gem on April 16, 1940. He and his Indians got the season off right by defeating the White Sox 1-0.

The Indians missed the American League pennant by one game to the Tigers. Feller went on to throw two more no-hitters, in 1946 and 1951.
9. Traveling backwards in time, Joe DiMaggio of the Yankees set a baseball record for hitting safely in 56 consecutive games in 1941. He broke the record of Willie Keeler's 44-game streak. Keeler broke the record that was set by Bill Dahlen, who hit safely in 42 consecutive games. Whose record did Dahlen break?

Answer: George Davis

Keeler set his mark in 1897 with the Baltimore Orioles. Willie broke Dahlen's record of 42 which was set in 1894. Davis, who was a New York Giant third baseman at the time in 1893, hit safely in 33 games. Davis' record lasted only one season before Dahlen broke it. George Davis was a Hall of Fame inductee in 1998. DiMaggio's record is one of those that is said will never be broken.
10. Who was the first African-American pitcher to win a World Series game?

Answer: Joe Black

Black was a 1952 rookie with the Dodgers. Joe went 15-4 in the season and was the opening-day series pitcher in the 1952 World Series against the Yankees. He won the game 4-2, but the Dodgers lost the series four games to three.
