Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1892, who became the first team win 100 games in a season?

Answer: Boston Beaneaters

The other 3 teams listed, were in the American League, which was non-existent until 1903. In the last season of the World Championship Series in 1892, the Beaneaters had a record of 102-48, remarkable in a 150 game season. The Beaneaters were led by the bat of Hugh Duffy, and the arms of Kid Nichols and Jack Stivetts.

They beat the Cleveland Spiders in the Championship, 5-0-1. The Spiders were led by the great Cy Young. In 1905, the New York Giants were the 2nd team in history to pass the century mark with 105 wins.
2. Who was the first player in baseball history, to hit 100 career home runs, in 1890?

Answer: Harry Stovey

The other players did not even play, for at least another 25 years yet. Stovey, the pitcher/first baseman/outfielder played 14 seasons, retiring in 1893. He hit his 100th in 1890 with the Boston Reds, and had a total of 122 shots in his career. He played in the American Association, Players, and National Leagues.
3. Who was the first player to steal 100 bases in a season, in the 20th century?

Answer: Maury Wills

Ty Cobb set a record for stolen bases in 1915 with the Detroit Tigers, when he swiped 96. Almost 50 years later, Maury Wills of the Los Angeles Dodgers broke the record in 1962, by burglarizing 104. Wills' mark was later broken in 1974, by the speedster Lou Brock of the St.Louis Cardinals. From there it was Rickey Henderson in 1982, stealing 130. Rickey's mark carried throughout the rest of the 20th century.
4. In 1974, who was the first pitcher to appear in 100 games in a season?

Answer: Mike Marshall

All others listed had already retired, and Marshall was the only primary relief pitcher listed. It was Mike who broke the century mark in 1974, when he appeared in 106 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers. With his appearances and his 15-12 record, he earned the National League Cy Young Award in the season. Montreal traded Mike to the Dodgers, after the end of the 1973 season.
5. What National League team lost 100 games in the 2002 season?

Answer: Milwaukee Brewers

Although both the Devil Rays and Tigers lost 106, they were American League teams. The Brewers hit the century mark for the first time in their history, with a record of 56-104. Pitcher Ben Sheets led the pitching staff with a 11-16 record. They were managed by Davey Lopes and Jerry Royster.
6. In what year was the 100th person inducted into the Hall of Fame?

Answer: 1964

The Hall of Fame began in 1936 with 5 inductees. The 100th inductee came in 1964, in the names of Luke Appling, Red Faber, Burleigh Grimes, Miller Huggins, Tim Keefe, Heine Manush, and John Ward. The Hall did not declare any 1 inductee as the 100th officially.
7. In 1884, who was the first player in history, to strikeout 100 times in a season?

Answer: Sam Wise

The others listed did not play for another 75 years in the Majors. Nicknamed 'modoc', Sam of the Boston Beaneaters broke Pud Galvin's record of 79, by striking out 104 times in 1884. That record would hold for 30 years, until Gus Williams of the St.Louis Browns struck out 120 times in 1914. Wise struck out 643 times in 12 seasons.
8. The 2000 season saw what team celebrate their 100th year in baseball?

Answer: Chicago White Sox

The Chicago White Sox franchise began in 1901, along with other newly formed teams, in the brand new American League. The White Sox won the American League Pennant in their first year of existence, under the management of Clark Griffith. Their first World Series came in 1906. The Detroit Tigers also celebrated their 100th year in 2000.
9. I was the first player to hit 100 doubles in a season. I have won 2 Cy Young awards, batted over .300 9 times in my career, and won the Rookie of the Year Award twice. I also led the league in stolen bases 5 times. I was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1959. Who am I?

Answer: None listed

No player may win a Rookie of the Year Award twice in their career, and the 20th century season record for doubles was 67. It is also unlikely to have a Cy Young award-winning pitcher hit .300 9 times, and lead the league in stolen bases 5 times.
10. In 1914, who was the only pitcher in the 20th century, to have a less than 1.00 ERA for the season?

Answer: Dutch Leonard

The other pitching greats had not yet been born. In 1914, Leonard of the Boston Red Sox, finished the season with an ERA of .096. His record of 19-5 helped the Red Sox to a 2nd place finish. A remarkable season and ERA, and his low run count endured the entire 20th century. In 1914, Leonard's Red Sox rookie teammate was Babe Ruth.
