Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first team in the 2003 season to win 30 games?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

On May 17th, on a Saturday night, the Braves beat the Padres, to become the first team to win 30. They had the best record in MLB, and a first place seat in the National League Eastern Division.
2. Which 2003 team moved from Brooklyn after the 1957 season?

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers moved from Brooklyn after the 1957 season. Under the helm of manager Walter Alston, it took just 2 seasons before the Dodgers earned a ticket to the World Series in 1959. They defeated the Chicago White Sox 4 games to 2. With a Dodger pitching staff of Roger Craig, Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Johnny Podres, and Larry Sherry, Sherry pulled off the MVP of the Series by winning 2 games.
3. Which of the following pitchers, led the league 8 times with most wins in the regular season?

Answer: Warren Spahn

None other listed even led the league once with most wins. Spahn did this from 1942-1965. 20 of his 21 seasons were in the Braves organization. He was also runner-up 3 times with most wins in a season. He won the 1957 Cy Young Award. This southpaw retired with 363 wins.
4. I played right field and first base most of my career of 21 seasons. I went to 4 World Series with the same team, winning 3 of them, and even hit 2 home runs in one of them. My red hair never bothered me, or my being left-handed. I was a star at my high school, Jordan High of Long Beach, California. I retired in 1978. Who am I?

Answer: Ron Fairly

Fairly, the number 6 jersey with the Dodgers for most of his career, hit 2 home runs in the 1965 World Series against the Minnesota Twins. He also had 11 hits and batted .379 in the Series. 14 times in Fairly's career, he was consistent and hit 10 or more home runs in a season. Staub was the only other player with red hair.
5. Who was the first slugger in the 2003 season, to hit 15 home runs?

Answer: Adam Dunn

All others listed had already retired. Dunn, an outfielder for the Cincinnati Reds, was the first to hit 15 in the season. He was in his 3rd season in the Majors, and hit a career high 26 in 2002.
6. Which of the following was NOT a Rookie of the Year?

Answer: Greg Pinchbeck

Ironically, the others listed were all Los Angeles Dodgers, who ruled the Rookie of the Year Awards in the 1990s. They had 5 winners. In addition to those listed, Raul Mondesi and Todd Hollandsworth also won the award, with 5 consecutive awards going to the Dodgers. Pinchy never won the award.
7. Nolan Ryan began his great career with what team?

Answer: New York Mets

Nolan did not play for the other teams listed. In 1966, he began his career with the Mets. After 6 seasons in New York, he donned the Angels' uniform for 8 seasons. In 1980, he began 9 of his seasons with the Astros of Houston. After that, 5 more seasons saw him as a Ranger. His career spanned 27 years, retiring in 1993.
8. What was the result of the 2002 World Series?

Answer: Angels over Giants, 4-3

The Angels won their first World Series, in the games called the West Coast Series against the San Francisco Giants. Angel Troy Glaus was named the Series MVP.
9. How many Atlanta Braves pitchers won more than 20 games in 2002?

Answer: 0

Even with the arms of Tom Glavine (18-11), Greg Maddux (16-6), Kevin Millwood (18-8), and Damian Moss (12-6), the Braves did not reach that plateau. Their staff was still good enough for the team to go 101-59, and finish first in the National League East.
10. After 21 seasons with the Braves, Hank Aaron played his final 2 seasons of his career with what team?

Answer: Milwaukee Brewers

His final seasons in 1975 and 1976, saw Aaron hit his final 22 career home runs as a Brewer, 755 home runs after his career began in 1954. Hank never hit 50 in a season, but he hit his jersey number of 44, 4 times in his career.
