Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which decade did the Boston Red Sox win two World Series championships?

Answer: 1910s

The Red Sox actually won four World Series in the 1910s decade. In 1912, they defeated the New York Giants, then the Phillies in 1915, the Brooklyn Robins (later Dodgers) in 1916, and the Cubs in 1918.
2. Which of these National League pitchers threw a no-hitter in the 2009 season?

Answer: Jonathan Sanchez

The others were already retired. Sanchez was in his fourth season with the Giants, and threw his no-no against the Padres on July 10. The Giants won 8-0. That was Sanchez's only season highlight as he went 8-12 with a 4.24 ERA. His 2008 season saw him go 9-12 with a 5.01 ERA.
3. Which manager took his team to the first-ever World Series crown in 1903?

Answer: Jimmy Collins

Collins took over the Boston American franchise when it joined the American League in 1901. His Americans defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates five games to three in the first-ever World Series in 1903. Jimmy was Boston's player-manager.
4. Which team was the first to have 1,000,000 fans go through their gates in one season?

Answer: 1920 New York Yankees

The Yankees more than doubled their 1919 season attendance and passed the one million mark in 1920. Their 1920 team attendance also doubled the league average. No doubt it was due to the new arrival of Babe Ruth. The next team to reach one million in fan attendance was the 1924 Tigers, although they finished in third place in the American League.

The 1927 Cubs was the next team to reach one million in attendance. Due to the end of World War II, 1946 saw a boom in attendance in both leagues, and many teams reached one million in attendance for the first time.
5. Which player was the first to win five Outstanding Designated Hitter awards?

Answer: David Ortiz

Ortiz of the Red Sox won all those in consecutive seasons from 2003-2007. The others listed were all National League players, which did not use the designated-hitter season rule.
6. Who was the first Japanese-born player to play Major League Baseball?

Answer: Masanori Murakami

Murakami was born in Otsuki in 1944. The pitcher signed as a free agent with the Giants in 1964. He went 1-0 in the season, then 4-1 in 1965. That was it for his Major League career.
7. Which team once played in a ballpark named Hilltop Park?

Answer: New York Highlanders

The Baltimore Orioles (Yankees franchise) moved to New York as the Highlanders in 1903. They played at Hilltop from 1903-1912, then moved into the Polo Grounds IV until 1922 under the Yankee name. 'The house that Ruth built' (Yankee Stadium) was completed for the 1923 season, and the Yankees won their first-ever World Series there in that season.
8. In his second stint with the Atlanta Braves, manager Bobby Cox took over the team mid-season 1990, and still had the reins 20 seasons later in 2009. Who did Cox replace in 1990?

Answer: Russ Nixon

Nixon replaced Chuck Tanner midseason 1988, and didn't last very long. So, here comes Cox back again in 1990, and Bobby took the Braves to five World Series appearances in the 1990s. The Braves however could only muster one win against the Indians in 1995.
9. Which Giants player was the first in the franchise's history to have their number retired?

Answer: Carl Hubbell

Maloney never played for the Giants. Carl was a career Giant pitcher from 1928-1943. He was a 20-game winner in five consecutive seasons. Carl also won the NL MVP in 1933 and 1936. Hubbell's number 11 was retired in 1944. The very next Giant to have his number retired was Mel Ott and his number 4 in 1949. Mays' 24 was retired in 1972, and Juan Marichal's number 27 was retired in 1975 for the Giants also.
10. Only one team in the 2009 season won 100 games. Which team was it?

Answer: Yankees

The Yankees won the World Series over the Phillies four games to two after going 103-57 in the season. The Angels won 97 games, the second most in the Major Leagues in the season. The Twins won the AL Central Division with only 87 wins, as did the Florida Marlins having 87 wins also in the NL East.
