Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This American League franchise never changed their name throughout the entire 20th Century.

Answer: Detroit Tigers

The Tigers and the Chicago White Sox were the only two AL franchises in the century that never changed their name. The American League began in 1901 with the first-ever World Series being held in 1903 with the Boston Americans going against the Pittsburgh Pirates in Boston's and the American League's first-ever crown.
2. This team in 2017 named Barry Bonds as a special advisory to their CEO.

Answer: San Francisco Giants

Bonds left baseball after the 2007 season with 22 seasons under his belt with the Pirates and Giants. He left baseball under questioning allegations of PED use and hit 762 career home runs. On March 21, 2017, he was contracted by the Giants to be the special advisor to Giant CEO Larry Baer.
3. While the great Hank Aaron played 21 of 23 seasons with the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves, brother Tommie played his entire career with this team.

Answer: Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves

The Hall of Fame great Hank Aaron played for the Braves from 1954-1974. Not only breaking the great Babe Ruth's career home run record of 714, he retired after two seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1976 with 755 career home runs. His younger brother Tommie played his entire career with the Braves from 1962-1971.

While Hank had the big bat, brother Tommie hit only 13 career home runs with him hitting eight as a rookie in 1962.
4. In the 2016 season there were only three 20-game winners. This team had the pleasure of having their pitcher lead everyone with 22 wins.

Answer: Boston Red Sox

Red Sox pitcher Rick Porcello was in his eighth season in Major League Baseball and his second with the Red Sox after being traded from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Porcello went 22-4 in the season and won the AL Cy Young Award in a close balloting over Detroit Tiger Justin Verlander. Washington's Max Scherzer and Toronto's J.A. Happ were the only other 20-game winners in the season.
5. The Alleghenys franchise became a part of the National League and changed their name to this name.

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

The Alleghenys began all their endeavors with the American Association in 1882. In 1887 they jumped to the National League with the same team name. It was the 1891 season that they changed their name to the famous Pirates. Although finishing in last place in the 1891 season, the same as the prior season, the team won 32 more games in the season.

The Pittsburgh franchise with the merge of the American League in 1901 would win the NL pennant in consecutive seasons from 1901-1903 and appear in the first-ever World Series in a loss to Boston of the American League.
6. In the decade of the 2000s, from 2000-2009, this team found a Cy Young Award pitcher four times.

Answer: Arizona Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks enjoyed watching Randy Johnson win the NL Cy Young Award in consecutive seasons from 2000-2002 (in addition to the 1999 season). They also witnessed Brandon Webb carry on the Arizona tradition by winning the award in 2006. Johnson won five Cy Young Awards during his 22-season career along with four pitching titles and a Triple Crown Award.
7. While the Texas Rangers led the American League in wins for the 2016 season, this team led the National League in wins.

Answer: Chicago Cubs

The Rangers impressed many fans by winning 95 games in the season. The Indians were no slouch and pulled off 94 wins. In the National League, the Cubs led everyone by being the only team to win 100+ with 103. The Washington Nationals were the NL's second most winning team with the franchise's 95 wins. The Cubs defeated the Indians in the 2016 World Series in seven games.
8. This pathetic National League team finished in last place or next to last place eight times in the 1920s.

Answer: Philadelphia Phillies

Finishing out the 1910s with a last place finish in 1919, the Phillies tried to start fresh in 1920. Unfortunately, they finished last again in the NL and last again in 1921. In 1922 they did better by finishing seventh of eight teams but ended up in the cellar again in 1923.

Another seventh place finish came in 1924, then came the cellar dwellers again from 1926-1928. The Phillies had six different managers in the decade.
9. The 1950s was an amazing decade with the Yankees finding six World Series appearances. This National League franchise found five.

Answer: Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers

The Yankees ruled another decade as they had in the past. The Dodgers in Brooklyn appeared in the 1952 and 1953 World Series with losses in both cases, then in 1955 won the franchise's first-ever World Series and it was against the almighty Yankees. The Dodgers lost to the Yankees in 1956, then won the prize again after moving to Los Angeles against the Chicago White Sox in 1959.
10. Along with the San Francisco Giants, this NL team made the 2016 playoffs by winning only 87 games in the season.

Answer: New York Mets

The Giants had a 87-75 record to get into the wildcard game as did the Mets with the same record. The Giants defeated the Mets but lost to the Cubs in the NLDS. The Cubs then put down the Dodgers in the NLCS. In the American League, the Blue Jays won a playoff spot along with the Orioles by both winning 89 games.

The Blue Jays defeated the Orioles in the wildcard game and went all the way to the ALCS but lost to the Indians four games to one. The Cubs defeated the Indians in the 2016 World Series.
