Brett grew up in Kiln, Mississippi and played high school football at Hancock North Central High. Brett's father, Irv Favre was his coach.
Irv's offense was run orientated so Brett did not get a chance to show his arm strength much. The only college to offer him a scholarship was Southern Mississippi.

When Brett went to the first summer football camp, the coaching staff saw the potential for Brett at quarterback. He started out in the 7th spot and moved up to backup. By the third game of Brett's freshman year, Brett was the starting quarterback for the Golden Eagles.

Wolf was a scout for the New York Jets and he was planning on drafting Brett for the Jets before Atlanta selected Brett. Wolf was then offered a GM position in Green Bay and hired Mike Holmgren as head coach. Wolf knew Favre would fit into Holmgren offense and traded a first round pick to get Brett from Atlanta.
