He was an English school teacher - he popularised the game in and around the town of Toronto (then York). He founded the Toronto Cricket Club in 1827.

When Canada became a nation in 1867, Sir John A. Macdonald (first Prime Minister) declared cricket as the national sport. However, with the subsequent popularity of other games like baseball, cricket fever died down.
