Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first captain of the Vancouver Canucks?

Answer: Orland Kurtenbach

The Canucks joined the NHL in the 1970-71 season. Kurtenbach scored 52 points in 51 games in that first season.
2. After a season with no captain, Andre Boudrias accepted the post for 1974-75. What was his position?

Answer: Centre

Like Orland Kurtenbach, Boudrias also retired from the NHL after his stint as Canucks captain.
3. Which of the following was not a Canucks captain in the 1970s?

Answer: Stan Smyl

Stan Smyl became captain in 1982 and filled the role until the 1989-90 season. Stan Smyl first joined the team in 1978, the same year the Canucks discarded their well-known blue and green uniforms, in favour of the yellow, black and orange "Halloween" horrors, but we can't blame Stan for that.
4. During the 1990-91 season, the Canucks had three captains.

Answer: True

This was the year of the "tri-captains" Doug Lidster, Dan Quinn, and Trevor Linden. Trevor was only 20 at the time, one of the youngest captains ever in the NHL.
5. Trevor Linden was the Canucks captain throughout most of the 1990s. Where was his birthplace?

Answer: Medicine Hat, Alberta

Trevor received a Maple Leafs hockey sweater for Christmas when he was four years old. He distinguished himself as a teenager in the Medicine Hat Tigers in the WHL and was named the Canucks' MVP in his rookie year. In the 1994 playoffs, Linden led the team to within a heartbeat of the Stanley Cup. The New York Rangers won the 7th game in overtime.
6. In 1997, Mark Messier became the new Canucks captain. How many Stanley Cups did he win during his career?

Answer: 6

Ironically, Mark Messier had been facing off against Trevor Linden as captain of the New York Rangers in the 1994 playoffs. He had won two of his six Stanley Cups as captain of the Edmonton Oilers and the New York Rangers, so the hopes were high.
7. Mark Messier was wildly popular with Vancouver fans.

Answer: False

Although Messier is considered to be one of the best NHL players of all-time, his style did not fit with the Canucks team. He only scored 60 points in his first season, the worst score of his career for a full season. The next two seasons he played little because of injuries. Fans blamed him for taking the captaincy from Trevor Linden. And his demand to be given his "lucky number" 11 did not sit well with fans.

This number used to belong to Wayne Maki and had been "unofficially retired" after he died of brain cancer in 1974.
8. Who replaced Mark Messier as Canucks captain in 2000?

Answer: Markus Naslund

Naslund joined the team in 1996, but requested to be traded in 1997 because he didn't get along with the new coach Mike Keenan. Fortunately that request was not honoured. Instead, Keenan was let go in 1998.
9. What was the nickname of the winning line the 2002-03 Canucks captain played on?

Answer: The West Coast Express

The West Coast Express is a commuter train that links Fraser Valley communities to Vancouver. The Canucks' line that was named after it consisted of Markus Naslund, Todd Bertuzzi, and Brendan Morrison and was widely considered to be the top NHL line during the 2002-03 season.
10. Who was named captain of the Canucks in 2008?

Answer: Roberto Luongo

Luongo is the first NHL goalie to be made captain since Bill Durnan of the Montreal Canadians in 1947-48. The NHL rulebook forbids him from wearing the "C", and his alternate captains have to take over some of the captain's on-ice functions.
