Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first family in baseball to have five brothers play the Major League game?

Answer: Delahanty

The Delahantys consisted of Ed, Frank, Jim, Joe, and Tom. They all played around the turn of the Century when the National and American Leagues combined to make it Major League Baseball. The Delahantys were all good ball players with Ed being the best as he batted over .400 three times in his 16-season career.

It would all end in a mystery and a never-explained incident that occurred in Niagara Falls in 1903. Was Ed killed, did he slip, or was it a suicide? At any rate, he was found at the bottom of the Falls. Ed was the only one of his brothers to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The Hall opened its doors to him in 1945.
2. This player was a blessing to many two-fold. He was born on Christmas Day and had a Hall of Fame career. When he was born, he probably sped out of the delivery room like lightning. Who is this Hall of Fame great?

Answer: Rickey Henderson

Rickey was born on Christmas Day in 1958 in Chicago. Henderson was the only one listed who had speed, and he showed that throughout his career of 25 seasons from 1979-2003. He played for nine different teams because they all wanted his legs. He retired with 1406 stolen bases while being the first speedster to reach 1000.

He set a season record in 1982 by stealing 130. Rickey also had a bat. He hit 297 home runs and had a .279 career batting average.
3. Which of these managers never had the helm of the Oakland Athletics?

Answer: Tom Lasorda

Martin had the team from 1980-1982. LaRussa had them from 1986-1995 and was then replaced by Howe until 2002. Lasorda was a career Dodger manager for 21 seasons from 1976-1996. Lasorda replaced the great Walter Alston. He took the Dodgers to multiple National League and World Series crowns.
4. Which Major League team was the very first to draft future Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver?

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

Seaver was a pitcher at the University of Southern California when the Dodgers drafted him in 1965. Seaver wanted to stay in school and the draft deadline/signing expired. The Braves then drafted him but that was taken away from the franchise because they signed Tom before the college season ended, which violated the draft rules.

The Mets finally picked him up and signed him as an amateur free agent in 1966. He debuted for the Mets on April 13, 1967, and threw 5.1 innings with eight strikeouts.
5. One of the greatest pitchers in major league baseball history was "The Ryan Express", Nolan Ryan. He was the first pitcher in history to strike out 4000 hitters and the first to fan 5000. He retired with an amazing 5714 career strikeouts. Who was the second pitcher in history to hit the 4000 mark in strikeouts?

Answer: Steve Carlton

The others all retired with 4000 strikeouts except for Seaver who threw 3640 in his career. Carlton played mostly for the Cardinals and Phillies in his career, and when he hung up his glove in 1981, he had tallied 4136 fanned batters. His season high was 310 in 1972 with the Phillies, which helped him win his first of four Cy Young Awards. An easy induction into the Hall, he entered it in 1994.
6. In the early 1900s, some World Series were a best-of-nine game format. How many of those World Series went the nine games to decide a winner?

Answer: Zero

There were only four World Series that were a best-of-nine game format. The first was in 1903 for the very first World Series, then the infamous World Series of 1919, 1920, then the final time in 1921. Those four all went five games to three in favor of the Boston Americans, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, and New York Giants.
7. Which player hit the most home runs in a season in the Federal League?

Answer: Hal Chase

Chase started his career with the New York Highlanders (later Yankees) in 1905. He was traded to the White Sox in midseason 1913, then jumped to the Federal League in 1914. He hit his season high of 17 in 1915 in the Federal League with the Buffalo Buffeds.

His second highest tally was only five with the Giants of the National League. After the Federal League closed its doors in 1915, he signed with the Cincinnati Reds.
8. How many times did the great Ty Cobb bat over .400 in his career?

Answer: 3

Cobb first hit the .400 mark in 1911 by batting .420 which won him his only MVP. In the early days of the Chalmers Award (MVP), a player could only win it once. The following season in 1912 Cobb was at it again by batting .409. In 1922, the 'Georgia Peach' hit the mark again with his .401, and all three times with the Tigers. Cobb retired in 1928 after two seasons with the Philadelphia Athletics.

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1936 during the first round of inductions.
9. Who was the first umpire in history to have the honor of officiating ten World Series?

Answer: Henry O'Day

Hall of Fame umpire Bill Klem leads this whole group by umpiring 18 World Series, but it was O'Day who officiated in 10 first. O'Day was there in the early days of Major League Baseball in 1903, 1905, 1907,1908, 1910, 1916, 1918, 1920, 1923, and 1926. As the list shows, he was in some historical World Series and fortunately missed the 1919 Black Sox Scandal World Series.
10. Who was the first pitcher in history to throw three Triple Crowns?

Answer: Walter Johnson

The Big Train was a career Washington Senator from 1907-1927. He threw his Triple Crowns in 1913, 1918, and 1924. Johnson was one of the first five inductees into the Hall of Fame in 1936. Lefty Grove of the Philadelphia Athletics was the second to throw three Triple Crowns, and the first to throw four. He threw his in 1930, 1931, 1934, and 1937.
