Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What player, who was aquired from the Angels, played center field most of the time for the Cards?

Answer: Jim Edmonds

He was traded from the Angels in the 99 season.
2. From what team did the Cardinals get Fernando Vina?

Answer: Brewers

Vina played the second base position for the Cards and was the lead-off hitter most of the time.
3. What pitcher was sent down to the minors during the 2001 season for his wild pitching?

Answer: Rick Ankiel

He was sent down to the AAA league then to AA and still then to single A league. In 2002 he is on the D.L.
4. From what country does the player Albert Pujols come from?

Answer: Dominican Republic

Pujols was taken as a rookie during the 2001 season.
5. Which of the following, retired after the 2001 season?

Answer: Mark McGwire

Mark, as I'm sure you know, was the first baseman for the Cardinals and broke the record for most homers in a season with 70. He had tendenitis during the 2001 season so he did not play much.
6. During the 2001 season what pitcher was the first pitcher in the rotation for most of the season?

Answer: Matt Morris

Morris was also the leadoff pitcher for the rotation in 2002 and was followed by Kile and, because of injuries, the rest of the rotation had been changing a little.
7. Albert Pujols is a very versitile player. During the 2001 season he mainly played outfield, but what other position did he sometimes play?

Answer: Third Base

He often played for Placido Polanco at third. In 2001 he played some games at first base so that is why I did not include that in the answers.
8. What first baseman did the Cardinals aquire to replace McGwire?

Answer: Tino Martinez

The Cardinals did want Jason Giambi, but the Yankees offered more money so the Cardinals received the Yankee first baseman, Tino.
9. At the beginning of the 2002 season how many catchers did the Cardinals have?

Answer: 3

They were Eli Marrero, Mike Matheny, and the newly added Mike DeFelice.
10. What was the number worn by the manager of the 2002 Cardinals?

Answer: 10

Tony LaRussa has worn the number 10 for as long as I can think of while coaching the Cardinals.
