Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the power hitting outfielder turned first baseman that the Cubs traded in 1988 for Mitch Williams?

Answer: Rafael Palmiero

This was a nine player deal. The Cubs needed a closer, and it did win a division. The Cubs were not convinced Palmiero would hit for power. In this case, they were dead wrong.
2. In 1966, the Cubs traded Bob Buhl and Larry Jackson for which Canadian born hurler?

Answer: Ferguson Jenkins

Jenkins was a rookie, and the Phils wanted veteran arms after faltering two years earlier in 1964. The Cubs got a Hall of Famer and a consistant winner. The two pitchers did little for the Phillies.
3. When the Cubs stole Ryne Sandberg in 1982, who was the "key" player acquired along with Sandberg in this Phillies trade?

Answer: Larry Bowa

Sandberg was the throw in in this deal, as Larry Bowa and Ivan DeJesus were the key players in this deal. Ryno started at 3rd base in 1982 before becoming a Hall of Fame second basemen.
4. Maybe the worst trade of all-time, Lou Brock was sent to the Cardinals. Who was the key player that the Cubs received?

Answer: Ernie Broglio

At the time, the Cards fans hated this deal, they wanted to know, "Who is Lou Brock?" Brock blossomed after this 1964 deal, getting 3000 hits and reaching the Hall of Fame.
5. Name the slugger sent to the White Sox in return for Sammy Sosa?

Answer: George Bell

Looking bad the first year, Bell hit well as Sosa struggled. Sosa really blossomed in the mid '90s as a feared slugger, winning MVP honors in 1998. Bell lasted 2 years with the Sox.
6. Bill Buckner was sent to the Red Sox in 1984. What Hall of Fame pitcher came to the Cubs in this deal?

Answer: Dennis Eckersley

Eck was good as a starter, helping pitch the Cubs to the playoffs in 1984, but really exploded as a reliever after the Cubs gave him to the A's in 1987 for "prospects".
7. Joe Carter was also sent packing in 1984, but what pitcher was the key player received by the Cubs?

Answer: Rick Sutcliffe

Sutcliffe went 16-1 and won the Cy Young leading the Cubs to the division crown in 1984. Carter went on to have a fine career, capped off by the home run which ended the 1993 Series.
8. Bill Buckner was acquired in 1977 from the Dodgers along with Ivan DeJesus. What all-star outfielder was sent to LA?

Answer: Rick Monday

Monday saved an American flag at Dodger Stadium the previous season. This actually turned out well for the Cubs, as the Cubs recieved Ivan DeJesus as well. The Cubs sent Buckner to acquire Dennis Eckersley, and DeJesus was traded in the deal that brought Ryne Sandberg to the Cubs.
9. When the Cubs acquired Calvin Schiraldi and Al Nipper from Boston, who did the Cubs give up?

Answer: Lee Smith

The Cubs traded a thoroughbred and got two ponies. Smith was the all-time saves leader. The two players the Cubs received were not of any help to the Cubs.
10. When the Cubs gave batting champion Bill Madlock away, what over-the-hill all-star outfielder was the Cubs reward?

Answer: Bobby Murcer

Madlock won two more batting titles, and had a long and productive career. Murcer lasted two years and was not the ballplayer in his productive years with the Yankees. This was the most blatant example of Cubs ownership not wanting to pay the going rate for stars of the period. P.K. Wrigley did lots of damage in the late '70s with his deals.
