Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which two teams compete annually in the "Iron Bowl?"

Answer: Alabama vs. Auburn

One of the most heated interstate rivalry in the nation, Alabama and Auburn really do not like each other. Various arguments caused the series to be suspended between 1908 and 1948, and it took a resolution by the Alabama House of Representatives to get the games going again.
2. Florida vs. Georgia had come to be known as what?

Answer: The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party

Due to concerns about the consumption of alcohol among college students, the official name of the game was the Georgia-Florida/Florida-Georgia game (depending on which team is the home team in a given year).
3. What did Michigan and Minnesota battle for?

Answer: The Little Brown Jug

For a brief history of the Jug, in 1908, concerned that students from Minnesota would tamper with his water supply, Michigan coach Fielding Yost had his student manager purchase a 5-gallon jug from a local store for $.30. The Minnesota fans stormed the field following a 6-6 tie, and in the mayhem, Yost left the jug behind. Minnesota found it and their athletic director had it painted brown, and printed, "Michigan Jug - Captured by Oscar, October 31, 1903", on the side along with the score "Michigan 6, Minnesota 6" (Oscar was the custodian who found the jug after the game).

When Yost heard about the jug, he sent a letter asking for the jug back. Minnesota told him, that if he wanted it back, he would have to win it back, which he did when the teams met up the next time in 1909.
4. Notre Dame played who for the Shillelagh Trophy?

Answer: Purdue

This answer is a bit tricky, since the most well known rivalry is Notre Dame and USC playing for the 'Jeweled Shillelagh', but Notre Dame played Purdue for the Shillelagh Trophy. A shillelagh, in case you were wondering, is a large club made of oak, blackthorn, or other hardwood.

Answer: Virginia vs. Virginia Tech

While there is real no difference between a State and a Commonwealth, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Virginia, and Massachusetts are officially Commonwealths.

Answer: Colorado State vs. Wyoming

The Army ROTC programs ran the game ball 49 miles from Laramie, Wyoming, to Fort Collins, Colorado on game day. The trophy was an actual bronzed combat boot from Vietnam, which the combat scars were still visible.
