Under the leadership of the former national captain Morten Olsen, Brøndby beat Torpedo Moscow and Bayer Leverkusen to get to the semifinals. But after a 0-0 draw in Denmark, AS Roma finally beat Brønby 2-1 in Italy. The German player Rudi Völler, scored on Peter Schmeichel at the last minute.
