Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The great Ty Cobb had an amazing 46 inside-the-park home runs during his American League career. When he retired he was still two short of the National League record, which was set by which player?

Answer: Tommy Leach

Cobb played from 1905-1928. He spent all but two seasons with the Detroit Tigers, then his final two with the Philadelphia Athletics. All his 46 inside jobs came with the Tigers. Tommy Leach performed it 48 times in the National League from 1898-1918.

The right-handed slugger played for the Louisville Colonels, Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs, and Cincinnati Reds. Jesse Burkett set a Major League record by hitting 55 inside-the-park home runs. Jesse hit 43 in the National League and 12 in the American League. Burkett retired in 1905.
2. Which home team set an opening day record by having 80,200+ fans in attendance?

Answer: Colorado Rockies

It was the 1993 season on opening day April 9. The Rockies hosted the Montreal Expos for the Rockies' inaugural game. The Rockies won the game 11-4 behind the pitching of Bryn Smith who got Colorado's first-ever win. The Rockies ended the season with a 67-95 record and earned them a sixth place finish in the NL West, 37 games behind the division-winning Atlanta Braves.
3. What type of hit was the final career hit by Barry Bonds?

Answer: Single

Barry's final game was on September 26, 2007, and he went 0-for-3 in the game against the Padres. His previous game was on September 15 against the Padres at Petco Park in San Diego. He batted only once in the game and hit a single off San Diego pitcher Brett Tomko for the final hit of his career. Barry stepped away from baseball with 762 home runs.
4. History notes that the Brooklyn Dodgers were the first team to sign an African-American in Major League Baseball. Some fans might note that the Cleveland Indians were the first American League team to sign an African-American player. Which team was the third Major League team to sign a black player?

Answer: St. Louis Browns

When the Dodgers signed Jackie Robinson in 1947, that opened the door for Negro League stars to be signed also. The Indians later signed Larry Doby in 1947 also. The Browns were the third team to present a signing and it was Hank Thompson in July 1947. Hank played in only 27 games in the season and batted .256, then was released by the Browns.

The Giants signed him for the 1949 season where he spent the rest of his nine-season career and retired in 1956. The Giants were the fourth team to signed a Negro League player in the name of Monte Irvin in July 1949.

The Boston Red Sox franchise was the sole standout as they were the final team to sign an African-American in July 1959. The new Red Sox player was infielder Pumpsie Green.
5. Who was the first umpire in Major League Baseball to eject a player or manager more than 200 times?

Answer: Bill Klem

All those were Hall of Fame inducted umpires. Klem worked all in the National League from 1905-1941. Bill worked a record 18 World Series and was fortunate enough to miss the 1919 Black Sox Scandal. He was behind the plate for a record five no-hitters also. Bill was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1953. He died in 1951 at the age of 77.
6. Which Major League team was the first to have a warning track in their home ballpark for an entire season?

Answer: New York Yankees

The Yankees had the warning track at Yankee Stadium in 1923. This was the season that saw them in their third consecutive World Series with the Giants. However, it wasn't a warning track by design that was to give the outfielders a warning that the outfield wall was approaching.

This was a footrace running track so other track sporting events could be held. The idea worked well for the Yankee outfielders and thus the 'warning track' name came into the picture. The Yankees won their first-ever World Series in 1923.
7. Who was the first manager that managed all in modern-day baseball (post 1920) and was the first to lose 2000 games?

Answer: Bucky Harris

The others listed never lost 2000 career games. The legendary Connie Mack managed to a 3731-3948 record and began managing in 1894. Harris began his managerial career in 1924 with the Washington Senators. In his first two seasons with the Senators he took them to a World Series title and then another American League pennant. From there it was pretty much downhill and he left the Senators after the 1928 season.

The Tigers had Bucky at the helm in 1929, then he managed them until the Red Sox in 1934. From 1935-1942 he was standing at the top of the Senators again, then the Phillies in 1943.

After a few seasons on the sideline, he had a hand in the 1947 World Series Yankee crown. From 1950-1954 he was at the head of the Senators again. Harris retired after another stint with the Tigers in 1956 with a 2158-2219 career record.
8. Who was the first Major League player to win baseball's Slocum Award?

Answer: Babe Ruth

The Slocum Award was named after sportswriter Bill Slocum. It was presented annually by the New York Baseball Writers Association to a person that has given outstanding service in the name of baseball. The first recipient was sportswriter William B. Hanna in 1930. Ruth was the first player to win the award in 1931.

Other winners read like a Hall of Fame cast including Wilbert Robinson, Connie Mack, Branch Rickey, Casey Stengel, Jocko Conlan, and a host of Hall of Fame players.
9. Which team was the first to wear jersey numbers on the front of their shirts in addition to the back?

Answer: Dodgers

There were many uniform changes by teams in the 1950s. One of the those were the Dodgers who designed their jerseys with red numbers on the front lower left of the shirt. It was also the first time that the Phillies went to their pinstripe configuration in 1950.

After winning the NL pennant in their first pinstripe season, and their first pennant in 35 years, they stuck with them. Probably the most outrageous change at the time was the Pittsburgh Pirates who wore fiberglass hats, not batting helmets but fiberglass hats during the entire game. That uniform modification was rescinded before the season ended.
10. Which National League team set a baseball record for scoring the most runs in a game?

Answer: Chicago Colts

In the final season of the franchise being named the Colts, the NL franchise met the Louisville Colonels in 1897. It was the most runs scored in a game and the largest blowout in baseball history as the Colts embarrassed the Colonels 36-7. The Colts still finished the season in ninth place of 12 teams with their 59-73 record, 34 games behind the NL pennant-winning Boston Beaneaters.

In 1898 Chicago changed their team name to Orphans and then became the Cubs in 1903.
