Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which person gave the infamous words of, "Gentlemen, start your engines!"

Answer: George W. Bush

President Bush provided the famous words, after Lee Greenwood gave a performance. Mr. Bush arrived in a bevy of Secret Service agents, while a B-2 bomber and two F-15's did the flyover.
2. Which driver led the first lap of the Daytona 500?

Answer: Dale Earnhardt Jr

Biffle won the pole for the race, but had to start from the rear of the pack due to changing engines after their time trials. The DEI number 8 of Dale Jr., was the pre-race favorite by Las Vegas odds.
3. Richard Childress still employed Kevin Harvick and Robby Gordon. Who replaced the third team's driver, Steve Park for the 2004 season, and qualified for the Daytona 500?

Answer: Jeff Burton

Jeff had the ride in the AOL #30 in 2001, 2002, and was replaced by Steve Park midway in the 2003 season. Park finished 32nd in the point standings in 2003. In 2004, Sauter was replaced mid-season with Jeff Burton.
4. Which driver created the first caution flag in the 2004 Daytona 500?

Answer: Mark Martin

Unfamiliar to Roush Racing and Robert Yates' engines, Mark blew his #6 Viagra engine before on lap 8. Surprisingly enough, teammate Jeff Burton later blew his engine on lap 26.
5. In the 2003 season, DEI (Dale Earnhardt Inc.) ran five race teams. How many DEI teams competed in the 2004 Daytona 500?

Answer: 3

DEI went from Dale Jr., Michael Waltrip, John Andretti, Ron Fellows, and Jason Keller, in 2003, to a three team operation of only Dale Jr., Michael, and John in the #1 car. The other two drivers listed finished no better than 40th in points in 2003.
6. Which driver had the first crash in the race?

Answer: Derrick Cope

A former Daytona 500 winner, Cope in the number 50 Melling sponsored Ford, luckily for others, was in a one-car incident hitting the wall. Unfortunately for many drivers, this came right after a round of green flag pitstops. Pitting earlier, Kevin Harvick came of this caution smelling the checkered.
7. Penske racing added a new team in 2004. Which former Craftsman Truck Series driver, was added to the new Penske Racing team with Rusty Wallace and Ryan Newman in the Daytona 500?

Answer: Brendan Gaughan

Gaughan brought his Truck Series crew chief Shane Wilson, along with him for the season. On a Penske Racing note: 2004 was seeing Rusty's fourth crew chief in three seasons.
8. How did Michael Waltrip's day end?

Answer: Flipped his car numerous times

The number 15 Napa Chevrolet was an innocent bystander when Johnny Sauter slid into the #42 of Jamie McMurray, collecting Michael who rolled his car numerous times on the grass and ended upside down. After 10 minutes of trying to extracate Michael from the car, Nascar safety officials finally rolled the car upright, then Michael crawled out of the car by himself. Waltrip was extremely critical of the safety officials trying to cut roll bars from his car to get him out during the moments, and Nascar finally listened to Michael.
9. Who led the race at the halfway point?

Answer: Tony Stewart

Tony had always been in contention to that point. Amazingly, the official pole sitter Greg Biffle, ran 2nd at the time, after having to start at the rear of the field, for changing an engine after time trials. Biffle's day ended for the win when at lap 30, was penalized for speeding in pit row. At the halfway point, Dale Jr. had led the most laps in the race.
10. Who won the Daytona 500, the first points race of the 2004 season?

Answer: Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Coming out of nowhere and with 28 laps remaining, Scott Wimmer in the #22, took on only two tires in the last round of pit stops, but it did not last long as Tony Stewart regained the lead with 25 laps to go. It was Tony and Dale Jr. down the last hopefuls, until Jimmy Fennick, crew chief of Busch, tried to make a deal with Tony Eury Jr., the crew chief of Dale Jr. Due to Dale Jr. putting Kurt two laps down earlier in the race, Busch would not draft with Dale Jr. and chose Tony Stewart who was battling.

At any rate, Dale Jr. took the lead with 19 laps to go. It was down to Dale Jr., Stewart, and Kevin Harvick with 10 laps to go. The final results were: 1)Dale Earnhardt Jr. 2)Tony Stewart 3)Scott Wimmer 4)Kevin Harvick. 5)Jimmie Johnson, of the #48 Lowe's. Tony led the most laps with 97.
