Manager Bobby Cox and the Braves were on a roll in the 1990s. Their World Series appearances were in 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996, and 1999. Unfortunately they could put it all together only once in 1995 against the Indians. They ended the decade being blanked by the Yankees in 1999 four games to none.

After the infamous purchase of the Babe from the Red Sox to the Yankees in December 1919, Ruth was in the pinstripes from 1920-1934. In a dispute over him managing a team, the Yankees let him go on February 26, 1935. He signed with the Boston Braves on the same day and then retired after one season with them.

His final game was on May 30th, but not before hitting three home runs in a game on May 25.

Ted would win two more batting titles in 1957 and 1958, then retired in 1960.

In honor of Hall of Fame great Denton True "Cy" Young who died in 1955, baseball created the award and first presented it in 1956. The first recipient was Dodger pitcher Don Newcombe who went 27-7 in the season and helped the Dodgers to a World Series appearance against the Yankees.

The year was 1938. The pitcher was Johnny Vander Meer of the Cincinnati Reds. In only his second season in the majors, Vander Meer faced the Boston Braves on June 11 and shut them out 3-0. Johnny's next game was four days later on June 15. He shutout the Brooklyn Dodgers 6-0. He went 15-10 in the season and still finished 18th for the NL MVP Award.

Other future greats of baseball born in the 1940s were Johnny Bench, Rod Carew, Bill Freehan, Fergie Jenkins, Tony Oliva, Tony Perez, Pete Rose, and Nolan Ryan.
10. This decade saw manager Leo Durocher take a team to his only World Series Championship.

Durocher managed the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1940s, New York Giants in the 1950s, the Cubs in the 1960s, and the Astros for two seasons in the 1970s. His only crown came in 1954 with the Giants by defeating the Cleveland Indians four games to none.
