Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first All-American Bowl, played in Birmingham, Alabama in 1977, was won 17-7 by which school?

Answer: Maryland

Schools from the modern-day Atlantic Coast Conference won five All-American Bowls during its run from 1977 to 1990. Maryland won the very first game. Georgia Tech (1985), Florida State (1986), Virginia (1987), and NC State (1990) were the other schools to win. West Virginia won the 1983 contest. Minnesota's only appearance was in 1977. Iowa never made an appearance.

This game was typically played in late December, and was played on New Year's Eve four times.
2. Between 1959 and 1987, how many times did the Texas Longhorns win the Bluebonnet Bowl?

Answer: 3

Texas compiled a 3-2-1 record in the Bluebonnet Bowl, which was played at both Rice Stadium and the Astrodome in Houston during its lengthy run. Their first appearance, in 1960, ended in a 3-3 tie against Alabama. Their wins were against Ole Miss (1966), Colorado (1975) and Pittsburgh (1987, the final Bluebonnet Bowl played). Losses occurred against North Carolina (1980) and Air Force (1985).

The Bluebonnet Bowl was discontinued due to poor ticket sales.
3. Unlike the Bluebonnet Bowl, which ran for nearly three decades, the Salad Bowl in Phoenix only ran for five years. Which of the following statements about the Salad Bowl is FALSE?

Answer: Tennessee won the first Salad Bowl

Played from 1948 to 1952 in Phoenix, the Salad Bowl's first champion was Nevada, which beat North Texas (then North Texas State) 13-6. Both the Arizona Wildcats and the Arizona State Sun Devils appeared in the game, but neither was able to pick up a win. Arizona fell to Drake 14-13 in the second Salad Bowl, while Arizona State lost back-to-back Salad Bowls to Xavier and Miami of Ohio.
4. The Raisin Bowl, played in Fresno from 1946 to 1949, pitted a California school against an at-large team each year of its run. Which California school won two of those five Raisin Bowls?

Answer: San Jose State

Drake won the first Raisin Bowl in 1946, beating Fresno State 13-12. San Jose State would record wins over Utah State and Texas Tech in becoming the most successful team in the bowl's brief history.
5. Hosting a college bowl game was no bowl of cherries, as the state of Michigan found out, when its Cherry Bowl game lasted only two instalments. Which school beat Michigan State 10-6 to claim the first Cherry Bowl in 1984?

Answer: Army

The Pontiac Silverdome, former home of both the Detroit Lions and the Detroit Pistons, was the site of both Cherry Bowl contests. Maryland would defeat Syracuse in the second, and final, Cherry Bowl in 1985.
6. In what city was the now-defunct Freedom Bowl played?

Answer: Anaheim, California

Running from 1984 to 1994, the Freedom Bowl was played at Anaheim Stadium (now Edison Field) in Anaheim, California. Iowa won the first game in 1984, and Utah won the closing game in 1994. Washington won a pair of Freedom Bowls (1985 and 1989). No one lost by shutout, though Florida is the only team to record a single-digit score (7 points, in its loss to Washington in 1989).

The Gators were also the only team from east of the Mississippi River to play in the game.
7. The Oil Bowl is another short-lived New Year's Day game, played in Houston in 1946 and 1947. Two teams from what state were responsible for winning both Oil Bowl contests?

Answer: Georgia

The Georgia Bulldogs won the first Oil Bowl, beating Tulsa 21-6. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets won the last Oil Bowl 41-19 over St. Mary's. Of note is the fact that Herman Wedemeyer, who played Duke Lukela on the legendary crime series "Hawaii Five-O" for eight seasons, was a consensus all-American at St. Mary's, the first Hawaiian to be so honored.
8. Played predominately on Christmas Day during its run from 1982 to 2000, the Aloha Bowl received title sponsorship from what company?

Answer: Jeep

The Aloha Bowl featured a wide mix of teams from all over the continental United States during its run. Game winners included Alabama, Syracuse, UCLA and Wake Forest. Boston College, Colorado, Kansas and Washington each won two Aloha Bowls. From 1998 to 2000, the Aloha Bowl was part of a doubleheader with the Oahu Bowl. Both bowls were discontinued in 2000, after Chrysler, Jeep's parent company, merged with Daimler and pulled the sponsorship.
9. In December, 1961, New Mexico defeated Western Michigan 28-12 in the first and only Aviation Bowl. In what city was the Aviation Bowl played?

Answer: Dayton, Ohio

North Carolina has proclaimed itself as "First in Flight" on its license plates for years, but Ohio is indeed the "Birthplace of Aviation", as pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright grew up there. It was only fitting the game took place in their hometown.
10. The California Bowl, played from 1981 to 1991, pitted the champion of the Big West Conference against the champion from which other conference?

Answer: MAC

Fresno State dominated the California Bowl during its existence by winning four games. San Jose State won two contests and UNLV picked up a victory. Toledo, Northern Illinois, Eastern Michigan and Bowling Green supplied wins for the MAC, or Mid-American Conference, during this series.
