Harold Brasington was the mastermind behind the "Lady in Black". He wanted to build the first superspeedway that the cars of Nascar would run on.

Over 80 total cars came to Darlington with the hope of competing, but only 75 cars actually started the race. Most of the drivers started to buy tires from the fans because they ran out of the tires they came with.
