Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who scored the winning goal against Manchester United on 8th May 2002 to secure the league title for Arsenal?

Answer: Sylvain Wiltord

This game was played away at Old Trafford, the single goal was enough to to take all three points and most importantly the league title. It was the second last game of the season for both teams. Arsenal won their last 13 games of the season, a single-season record for the top flight in England (Football League, FA Premier League), and equalled the top flight record of 13 consecutive wins set by Tottenham Hotspur in 1960-61, when they opened their double-winning season by winning their first 11 games (they won their last 2 games of the pevious season). Arsenal set an all-time record of 14 consecutive wins for the top flight when they won their first game of the 2002-03 season (they drew their second game, and thus failed to establish a record 15 wins for any division of football in England).
2. How many games did Arsenal lose during the season?

Answer: 3

Arsenal's impressive away record (not losing all season) and scoring in every premiership game wentt a long way to winning the league. The last time a team had gone through the season undefeated away from home was Preston North End in 1888-89, the first season of the Football League, back in the 19th century!
3. Arsenal were involved in an epic FA cup quarter-final clash with Newcastle that went to a replay. What was the combined score of both games.

Answer: 4-1

The first game ended 1-1 all with goal from Edu and Laurent Robert, the second game at home was more one-sided ending 3-0 to Arsenal.
4. Thierry Henry was the top goal scorer in the league for the season, how many goals did he score?

Answer: 24

He scored 32 goals for the season including all competitions, however Ruud van Nistelrooy managed 34!
5. Arsenal won the FA Cup beating Chelsea 2-0 in the Final. Who scored?

Answer: Parlour and Ljungberg

Both goals were very similar, long rang curlers into the top left hand corner, Parlour scored first.
6. Who scored an excellant chip to beat Peter Schmeichel at Aston Villa to crown an incredible comeback?

Answer: Robert Pires

Arsenal won 2-1, including a fine penalty save from David Seaman.
7. Arsenal faced Manchester United early in the season, on 25th November 2001, and beat them courtesy of 2 blunders by Fabian Bartez, goal-keeper for ManU. Who scored the first goal of the game?

Answer: Paul Scholes

Bartez gifted Henry 2 goals with a dodgy backpass and a dodgy attempt at picking the ball up! Arsenal won 3-1.
8. An infamous game of this season involved Liverpool at Highbury. In a mad ten minutes how many men were sent off?

Answer: 3

Martin Keown, Dennis Bergkamp and Jamie Carragher were all sent off, Carragher was pelted with coins from the crowd! He proceeded to throw them back and was sent off! (Fair play I say!)
9. Arsenal had another epic encounter against Gillingham in the FA cup 5th round, what was the final score?

Answer: 5-2

Tony Adams scored a rare goal for Arsenal in the 60th minute, to end a very good Gillingham performance.
10. Arsenal couldn't quite manage the treble, with the European Cup proving a bridge too far. Who missed the penalty against Deportivo la Coruna that contributed to Arsenal's demise?

Answer: Thierry Henry

Arsenal eventually lost 2-0, but still had a great season, winning the League and the FA cup! This was the 3rd time they'd won the Double: 1971, 1998 and 2002, which equalled the record-setting three of Manchester United: 1994, 1996 and 1999.
