Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the Dragons' top tryscorer for season 2004?

Answer: Matt Cooper

Great year for Matt as he got a NSW debut and even made the Kangaroo squad. He also won Red V Members player of the year following his strong play. Matt also showed his talent in defence making an average of 18 tackles per game, which was the most of all the backs.
2. What was the Dragons' defence rated overall in the NRL?

Answer: Second

Good effort to turn it around from season 2003, the Dragons defence finally worthy of the top sides. Previously ranked poorly in defence, they got to 2nd in tries conceded (3.08 per game) and points conceded (17.84 per game).
3. Which forward had the most hit-ups for the Dragons in 2004?

Answer: Dean Young

Dean Young made 321 hit ups through the 2004 season. He also topped the tackle count. He has been at the Dragons for a few years and had finally cemented a spot in the top grade, he came up through the junior sides and played first grade as a teenager, showing his ability.
4. Which player made the most offloads for the Dragons in season 2004?

Answer: Lance Thompson

Lance made a great effort and made 47 offloads, followed very closely by Jason Ryles with 46. Both these players were very important to the Dragons in the way they initiated second phase play.
5. Dean Young played 25 games for the Dragons in 2004, the most of any player?

Answer: True

He played a lot of games in 2004, but he was unlucky to miss out on city country selection with his strong play and he was a standout in the 50-nil defeat of Wests Tigers with great offloads and line breaks.
6. Which of these players played just one game for NSW in the origin series?

Answer: Ben Hornby

He was very unlucky not to be picked for game two. Anthony Minichiello reclaimed fullback after playing wing in game one, and Hornby was forced out of the team. His utility value is great as he can also play 5/8 if injuries happen, which he did on a couple of occasions for the Dragons.
7. Which player won Player of the Year at the Dragons awards?

Answer: Mathew Head

He took over the goalkicking for part of the year when Mark Riddell was out of form and kicked 49 goals. Head also scored five tries, kicked a field goal, made nine line breaks and 20 offloads.
8. How many games did the Dragons win in the entire regular season of 2004?

Answer: 14

14 wins was enough to get to fifth position, but they exited week one of the finals series with a loss to Penrith. It was the first time a team finished fifth and did not make it to the second week of the finals since the introduction of the McIntyre system. Following the loss to Penrith, two teams below them (Melbourne and the Cowboys) won and the Dragons season was over.
9. Which player had the most 40/20 kicks for the Dragons in season 2004?

Answer: Trent Barrett

Trent Barrett kicked two 40/20s in the entire season, Brent Sherwin led this stat overall with five 40/20 kicks. Mathew Head kicked one 40/20.
10. Which Dragons player had the most dummy half runs in 2004?

Answer: Reece Simmonds

Reece made a lot of runs out of dummy half, as he got the Dragons out of a lot of trouble with good metres out of our own end. Another very consistent player for the Dragons with 23 games, he is from the South Coast and played footy with Jason Ryles growing up.
