Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many Cup finals did Dutch clubs contest in Europe between 1971 and 1980?

Answer: 6

Starting with Ajax. In 1971 they beat Panathinaikos at Wembley 2-0, in 1972 Inter Milan fell victim to the Amsterdam-side in Rotterdam, again 2-0, and in 1973, Juventus was beaten 1-0 in Belgrade. In 1974 the Ajax-reign was over, but there was Dutch success with Feyenoord who beat Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA-Cup 4-2 on aggregate (2-2 in Londen, 2-0 in Rotterdam.

The next year FC Twente carried the Dutch flag, but was unable to win the UEFA Cup. After a promising 0-0 in Düsseldorf (used as the venue for this occasion as Borussia's stadium Bökelberg was considered too small), Twente lost 1-5 at home. Finally in 1978 PSV beat Bastia in the UEFA-Cup.

In France it was a goalless draw, but at home the Dutch side beat the French 3-0.
2. In the 1990-1991 season, PSV won the title before Ajax on goal difference. What was that difference?

Answer: 2

It was suspense until the last day of the competition. In fact, one could argue that the title was decided the penultimate day of the season. PSV had to go to third-placed FC Groningen, and Ajax had a relatively easy match against relegation-threatened SVV. But as PSV not quite unexpectedly lost (4-1) in Groningen, Ajax surprisingly went down 1-0. And with a relatively easy last match at home for both sides, Ajax knew that it had blown the chance of retaining the title.
3. MVV of Maastricht, suffered a nightmare against Ajax in the 1964-1965 season. What happened?

Answer: They missed three penalties

It happened on September 13th, 1964, to be exact. The first two penalties were held by Ajax goalkeeper Ronnie Boomgaard, the third one was blasted wide. Ajax escaped defeat that way because the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
4. In 1964, the Championship was won by Amsterdam-outfit DWS. What was so significant about that title?

Answer: DWS had been promoted the previous year

The club proved their worth, by ending up second the next year and fourth the year after.
5. The 'eredivisie' has always consisted of 18 clubs?

Answer: False

Between 1962 and 1966, there were only 16 instead of 18 clubs at top level.
6. Which club was the first champion in the professional era?

Answer: Willem II

Four teams met in playoffs after winning their respective divisions. Remarkably they all were from the southern province Noord-Brabant. For the record, Willem II (from Tilburg) ended up before NAC (Breda), PSV and Eindhoven.
7. For what proud achievement Feyenoord was NOT responsible?

Answer: Winning all three European Cup competitions

That honour went to Ajax.
8. Which club wasn't the product of a merger?

Answer: Willem II

AZ was founded in 1967, from Alkmaar'54 and FC Zaanstreek, FC Twente (1965) originates from bitter rivals 'Enschedese Boys' and 'Sportclub Enschede', and southern club Roda JC (1962) merged from 'Roda Sport' and 'Rapid JC' which was in itself the product of a merger between Rapid and Juliana.
9. For which Dutch club had Ronald Koeman NOT played?

Answer: Vitesse

He had been a trainer with the Arnhem club though.
10. Feyenoord-goalkeeper Eddy Treytel, once was responsible for a bizarre incident, to say the least. What happened?

Answer: He shot a seagull out of the sky.

This bizarre incident happened during the local derby against Sparta in 1971. The unfortunate seagull was stuffed and is now on view in Feyenoord's trophy-cabinet.
