Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1979 - A 1-0 victory for Nottingham Forest of England over Swedish Champions Malmo, saw Trevor Francis score the winner. It also saw two Englishmen take charge of the respective teams, Brian Clough was Forest coach but who was the man to coach the Swedes to their only European final?

Answer: Bob Houghton

Forest won the trophy thanks to Trevor Francis's goal right on half time. The game was played in Munich's Olympic stadium on May 30th 1979 and was part of an era of English domination in the competition.
2. 1980 - And a return to the final for Nottingham Forest. And like the previous year a famous 1-0 victory was recorded, but who did they beat on this occasion?

Answer: SV Hamburg

A goal by John Robertson in the 19th minute was enough for Forest to beat Kevin Keegan's German champions in Madrid's Bernabeu Stadium on the 28th May 1980. Forest were never to compete in another European final but it was a golden time for them.
3. 1981 - Yet another English side make it to the final, but which team beat Real Madrid in Paris by a single goal?

Answer: Liverpool

Alan Kennedy scored the only goal in the 82nd minute in a tense encounter in the Parc des Princes on 27th May, 1981. It would be one of four successes for the Liverpool club in a golden period of their history.
4. 1982 - The English domination continued with Aston Villa winning against all odds against Bayern Munich. Who scored the only goal of the game to take yet another English club victory over a German club?

Answer: Peter Withe

Peter Withe stooped to win the game against a strong German side. Sixty seven minutes had elapsed in Rotterdam before Villa completed a five year span of English successes in the Premier competition.
5. 1983 - At last no English representative in the final but who played in the match?

Answer: SV Hamburg vs Juventus

Hamburg won the game by yet another single goal margin. A ninth minute strike by Felix Magath in Athens saw the disappoinment of three years earlier go away for good. Hamburg were well worth their win.
6. 1984 - This final was decided on penalties?

Answer: Yes

30th May, 1984, Liverpool faced Roma in Rome. The game ended 1-1 after full time and extra time for a penalty shoot out. Liverpool won it 4-2 thanks to Bruce Grobbelaar's heroics. It would be the last time an English club would win the Cup for 15 years.
7. 1985 - A final remembered solely for the awful scenes on the terraces where 39 Juventus supporters were killed when a wall collapsed on to them. The game was played and a Michel Platini penalty gave Juventus a 1-0 win over Liverpool, but where was the game held?

Answer: Heysel Stadium

Like it has been stated in the question, this game will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. English teams would be banned from all competitions in Europe for the next 7 years, it was most certainly dark days in European football.
8. 1986 - Like two years earlier the final was decided on penalties after Steau Bucharest defeated Barcelona 2-0 on the kicks after 120 minutes of negative, tactical football ended goalless, but how many of the penalties were saved by the keepers?

Answer: six

Amazingly six penalties were saved. Steau players Majearu and Bölöni had their pemalties saved whilst Barcelona saw all four spot kicks stopped, the guilty parties were: Alexanko, Pedraza, Alonzo and Marcos. Steaua keeper Ducadam saved all four Barcelona penalties to give the Romanians an un-deserved trophy.
9. 1987 - Porto vs Bayern Munich in Vienna, but did Porto have to come from behind at half time to win?

Answer: Yes

At least there were goals this time and for the first time since 1977 more than one goal per side was scored. Porto came behind to win 2-1 thanks to goals from Madjer in the 78th minute and then Jaury two minutes later in an amazing turn around, Munich had been leading thanks to a great goal by Kogl. Munich were to get more heartache whilst leading in a final in years to come..more later.

Answer: 6-5

Unlike the 1986 final, this game was better but the penalties were all converted. After 5 pens each it was 5-5. PSV then made it 6-5 through Janssen before Dutch keeper Van Breukelen saved Benfica's Veloso's penalty to give Dutch glory to a third team from that nation after Ajax and Feyenoord.
11. 1989 - Which two Dutchmen scored two goals each in AC Milan's 4-0 thumping of Steaua Bucharest?
