Middlesbrough finished the season 19th in the table just two points behind the 'safety zone' of 17th position. Cup final defeats against Leicester City in the League Cup (1-0 after a 1-1 draw) and Chelsea in the FA Cup (2-0) capped a disappionting season for Middlesbrough.

Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest & Sunderland were the teams relegated. The following year Forest won the Division 1 title, Middlesbrough came in 2nd and Sunderland finished 4th. Sunderland just missed out on the return after being beaten in the play-offs.
