Paul O'Neill, the Reds' right fielder at the time, bobbled the ball multiple times until, out of frusteration, he kicked the ball all the way home, holding a Phillie runner at 3rd base. This guy was not terribly popular to begin with, and as you might guess, he became less popular after this infamous play. Who was the Phillie runner who held up at thrid base? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. How many World Series games did the Phillies win in the 20th century? Hint

Question 4 of 10

Question 5 of 10
5. In 1980, Pete Rose probably had as much to do with the Phillies World Series title as anybody. "Charlie Hustle" not only led by vigorous example, but also showed the team how to act like winners and believe in themselves. Mike Schmidt, more than anyone, benefitted from Rose's influence, hitting 40 or more homers 3 times during Rose's 5 years with the club, the only three times in his career that he reached the 40 HR plateau. Rose himself, though he led the league in doubles in 1980, did not have one of his best years by his standards. What was Pete's batting average in 1980? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Which member of the 1993 Phillies rotation started the All-Star game that year against Randy Johnson? Hint

Question 7 of 10

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Two Phillies played for both pennant winning teams in 1983 and 1993. Darren Daulton was one (he had 3 AB in 1983). Who was the other?

Answer: Larry Andersen

All of the players listed had two stints with the Phillies, but only "L.A." played for both pennant winners.
2. In a game against the Reds, a single was hit to right field.

Answer: Steve Jeltz

"Jet" was probably the worst player in Phillies history.
3. How many World Series games did the Phillies win in the 20th century?

Answer: 8

1 in 1915, 4 in 1980, 1 in 1983, and 2 in 1993. They actually went 65 years without winning a World Series game.
4. Steve Carlton posted a respectable 3.33 ERA in 1985, but his record sure didn't show it. What was the legend's record that year?

Answer: 1-8

"Lefty," along with Koufax, Lefty Grove, Warren Spahn, and Randy Johnson, is considered by most true baseball hisorians to be one of the five greatest left-handed pitcher in history. Unfortunately, like Willie Mays, he just didn't know when to hang 'em up.

Answer: .282

Rose was the only Phillie to play in every game that year. The intangibles he brought to the club can never be taken lightly, but he only hit .282 that year, which for Rose, was a tragic number. Manny Trillo hit .292, Larry Bowa hit .267, and Bake McBride hit .309.
6. Which member of the 1993 Phillies rotation started the All-Star game that year against Randy Johnson?

Answer: Terry Mulholland

A game that teammate John Kruk will never forget. Kruk saw his life pass before his eyes when a Johnson fastball almost hit him, then promptly struck out on the next two pitches, which, incidentally, were nowhere near the plate! Mulholland finished the year with 12 wins and a 3.25 ERA, the best mark of all the Phillies starters that year.
7. Why on Earth did the Phillies trade away Ryne Sandberg?

Answer: Because Juan Samuel was, in their opinion, a better prospect

Of course, we all know how that one turned out. Sandberg won an MVP two years later, and Phillies fans are still trying to get over their displeasure with Samuel.
8. Why did the Phillies activate Tim McCarver in the fall of 1980?

Answer: So that he could play in his fourth decade

McCarver had the good fortune of beginning his career in 1959 with St. Louis. He became the second player to play in four decades (Minnie Minoso) when the Phillies activated him in September, 1980.
9. Mike Schmidt's home run in Montreal on the second to last day of the 1980 season may have been the biggest of his career. Which announcer called the shot, shouting, "He buried it!"?

Answer: Andy Musser

Musser se3emingly knew virtually nothing about the game, and managed to annoy just about everyone over the years that he broadcasted Phillies games. Still, most loved that call!
10. Steve Carlton never lost 20 games for the Phillies.

Answer: False

"Lefty" did go 13-20 in 1973, the year after he won 27 games for the Phils.
