Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the two leagues merged for the 1970 season, some teams went from the NFL to the AFC, and from the AFL to the NFC, along with a three division system for each conference. In 2002, the league did a geographical realignment of all the teams and went to a four division system for each conference. Beginning with the 1970 season, which 2006 team has changed divisions and/or conferences the most?

Answer: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

When the Bucs and Seahawks came in the league in 1976, the Bucs were in the AFC west and the Seahawks were in the NFC west. The following season, the Bucs went to the NFC central and the Seahawks went to the AFC west. Both teams stayed there until 2002 when the Bucs went to the NFC South, and the Seahawks went back to the NFC West.

When the Colts moved from Baltimore to Indy, they stayed in the AFC East until 2002, and when the Oilers moved from Houston to Tennessee, they stayed in the AFC Central until 2002.
2. Which quarterback led the Patriots to their first Super Bowl appearance?

Answer: Tony Eason

The Pats first went to the Super Bowl following the 1985 season versus the Bears. Tony Eason was the starting quarterback. The Pats went back following the 1996 season versus the Packers. Drew Bledsoe was the quarterback. The Pats were 0-2 before Brady came along.
3. Who was the last team to win the Super Bowl before the 1970 merger?

Answer: Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs defeated the Vikings 23-7 in Super Bowl IV following the 1969 seasons of the AFL and NFL. Super Bowl V was the first one played with the leagues merged following the 1970 season.
4. Most of us know the pain the fans of the Buffalo Bills must feel going to 4 straight Super Bowls and not winning. However, there is another team that had been to 4 Super Bowls without winning. Which team also began 0-4 in the big game?

Answer: Minnesota Vikings

During the first 9 Super Bowls, the Purple People Eaters of the Vikings went 4 times (pretty impressive) only to lose to the Chiefs, Dolphins, Steelers, and Raiders.
5. Which of the following quarterbacks played for the same team, but in the most cities?

Answer: Steve McNair

McNair was drafted in '95 by the Houston Oilers, moved with the team to Tennessee in '97, but played in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis for a year before the team moved to Nashville in 1998 playing in Vanderbilt stadium. He stayed in Nashville for name change to the Titans and moved into his new stadium, Adelphia Coloseum. Plunkett and the Raiders went from Oakland to LA. Lomax and the Cardinals went from St. Louis to Phoenix. Mike Pagel and the Colts went from Baltimore to Indy.
6. Who was the first overall pick of the 1999 NFL draft?

Answer: Tim Couch

McNabb went 2nd, James went 4th, and Williams went 5th. Remember the Colts catching all kinds of heat for drafting Edgerrin instead of Ricky? Remember Eagles fans booing and screaming in anger for drafting Donovan instead of Ricky?
7. Many teams have been to the Super Bowl throughout its 40 years. Who was the first player in history to have been in a Super Bowl in 3 different decades?

Answer: Gene Upshaw

A Super Bowl game in 3 different decades and later head of the players union, talk about spending your life dedicated to football! The second player to accomplish this feat was Bill Romanowski. Upshaw played in Super Bowls II, XI and XV. Romanowski played in Super Bowls XXIII, XXXII XXXIII and XXXVII.
8. Who was the number one overall pick in the 1983 NFL draft?

Answer: John Elway

Captain comeback was the first one to be taken in 1983 by the Baltimore Colts. Refusing to play for Baltimore, Elway demanded to be traded and soon got his wish. Draft day trades and players picking which teams they want to play for are somewhat commonplace today. Elway was one of the first, if not the first to get his way coming out of college.
9. Staying with number one draft picks, Peyton Manning was the first one to be taken in the '98 draft. Which person was taken second in 1998?

Answer: Ryan Leaf

If you're a Colts fan, you are thanking your lucky stars Indy drafted Manning over Leaf. Remember the hype? Interstingly enough, after Manning and Leaf went 1 and 2, there wasn't another QB taken until pick number 60 of the second round, Charlie Batch.
10. Which team has won the first 5 Super Bowls they played in?

Answer: 49ers

Steve Young finally got the monkey off his back when the 49ers beat the Chargers to win their 5th title in as many appearances.
