Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the technical innovations introduced in 2009 was a system that gave drivers a 6-second turbo each lap by using the energy stored under braking. What was the acronym for this system?

Answer: KERS

KERS stands for Kinetic Energy Recovery System. Lewis Hamilton became the first driver with equipped with KERS to win a Grand Prix in Hungary. Many teams either chose not to run the system from the start of the season, or discontinued development of their KERS midseason.
2. The first race winner of the 2009 season had only won one race previously, which was at the Hungarian Grand Prix of 2006. Can you name him?

Answer: Jenson Button

Jenson had been left without a drive in December 2008 following the withdrawal of the Honda team. It was therefore a surprise when the form book went out of the window with the newly established Brawn GP team, taking both pole position and the race win.
3. Martin Whitmarsh became the team principal for McLaren at the beginning of the 2009 season, however, following the 'lie-gate' scandal at the Australian Grand Prix, the previous team principal announced he would be leaving the McLaren F1 team altogether. Who is he?

Answer: Ron Dennis

Ron Dennis was the team principal for McLaren from 1981-2008. Although he still attended some races in 2009, the lie-gate scandal resulted in his decision to focus his attention on McLaren's road car business.
4. The Malaysian Grand Prix started in the late afternoon to accommodate television viewers in Europe, however, this meant that the race took place in heavy rain. The official classification of the race was at the end of which lap?

Answer: 31

Jenson Button was leading on lap 33 at the time the race was stopped, however, most cars were still on lap 32. Therefore the official classification was at the end of lap 31 as this was the last lap every car had completed.
5. At the Chinese Grand Prix, the anthem of Great Britain was played for the winning constructor in error. Which country's anthem should have been played?

Answer: Austria

A team's nationality is dependant on the national motor sport federation to which the team is registered. In the case of Red Bull Racing (the winning constructor of the Chinese Grand Prix) which the factory is based at Milton Keynes, UK, the team itself is owned by Dietrich Mateschitz and therefore they are a member of Die Österrichischer Automobil-Motorrad-Und Touring Club (ÖAMTC). "Land der Berge, Land am Strome" (Austria's national anthem) should therefore have been played instead of "God Save The Queen".
6. Ferrari were the 2008 constructors champions, however they didn't score their first points until the fourth race of the 2009 season when Kimi Raikkonen finished sixth. Which country hosted this race?

Answer: Bahrain

A Grand Prix was held in Bahrain for the sixth time in 2009. Whilst Jarno Trulli started from pole position and set the fastest lap of the race, Jenson Button was again the race winner.
7. Michael Schumacher achieved three consecutive wins in the 2006 season. Jenson Button also managed to do this in 2009. At which race did he achieve this feat?

Answer: Monaco

After winning in Monaco, Jenson parked in the pits as opposed to on the grid and had to run back down the start/finish straight to the podium ceremony.
In 2009, The BBC programme "Top Gear" unveiled Michael Schumacher as their tame racing driver called "The Stig". Driving a Ferrari FXX around the Top Gear Track, Michael recorded a lap time nearly seven seconds faster than any other previous Stig/Car combination. Unfortunately, he was using slick tyres, which are not road-legal in the UK and therefore the time was disallowed on the following show.
8. Was there was a race scheduled for North America in the 2009 season?

Answer: No

Many of the manufacturer racing teams were unhappy that the 2009 race calendar did not contain a race in North America as USA and Canada are huge markets for their road cars. Recent races in North America have been held at Indianapolis and Montreal.
9. Which driver achieved their first Pole Position at the German Grand Prix in July 2009?

Answer: Mark Webber

Mark Webber went on to win the race from his team-mate Sebastian Vettel, despite being given a drive-through penalty for hitting Rubens Barrichello's Brawn GP car on the run down to the first corner.
10. A former world champion achieved pole position at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Which one?

Answer: Fernando Alonso

In 2009, the starting weights of all the cars was published. As a result, it became clear that Fernando had considerably less fuel than the rest of the top ten and he could only run until lap 11. Correcting the grid based on fuel on board, Sebastian Vettel was the fastest driver.
