Devon Loch, ridden by Dick Francis and owned by the Queen Mother, was within yards of winning the 1956 Grand National, when it attempted to jump an imaginary fence, landed on its belly and by the time the horse recovered the race was won by E.S.B. ridden by David Dick.

Cassius Clay, before changing his name to Muhammad Ali, won the fight and the world title. He dominated the whole bout and Liston had no reply to his opponent's "Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee" technique. Clay's win was characterised as "the upset of the century".

England beat West Germany by 4-2. The score after 90 minutes was 2-2, West Germany having equalised on the 89th minute of the game. In extra time Geoff Hurst scored two goals to give England their first ever World Cup title. The third goal was strongly disputed by the Germans, claiming that Hurst's shot did not cross the line.

The goal was awarded and Hurst added a fourth in the last minute of extra time. Hurst was the first player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final.

The then 14 year old Nadia Comaneci won a total of three Gold medals at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. She was the all-around gymnastics winner and she also won the uneven bars and the balance beam. Soviet Union's Nellie Kim won gold, in the vault and floor exercises. Romanian Teodora Ungureanu and Soviet Union's Olga Korbut both won silver.

Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 in the Warrior's 169-147 win over New York Knicks. Wilt scored his 100 point with 46 seconds of the game remaining. Hundreds of spectators invaded the arena wanting to touch Chamberlain and the game was called to its conclusion. Richie Guerin scored 39 for the Nicks in the same game. Magic Jonson was three years old at the time and Michael Jordan was born in 1963.

Michael Phelps eclipsed Spitz's record of seven with his incredible eight medal haul. He also won six gold medals in Athens 2004 and four gold medals in London 2012. Australian Ian Thorpe won three gold medals at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Americans Aaron Peirsol and Ryan Lochte both won two gold medals in Beijing.

Jim Laker will always be remembered for his bowling in the Test match at Old Trafford in 1956, when he took 19 Australian wickets for 90, 9 for 37 in the first innings and 10 for 53 in the second. Tony Lock was the English bowler that claimed the other Australian wicket. Richie Benaud and Ray Lindwall bowled for Australia in the same test.

USA won 4-3 against the Soviet Union and 4-2 against Finland and topped the group with five points.

The Soviet Union came second, Sweden third and Finland fourth. Czechoslovakia won fifth place by beating Canada 6-1.

The 1980 final is considered as one of the best finals in Wimbledon's history. The five sets were 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-7 (16-18 in the tie-breaker), 8-6. The fourth set tie-breaker lasted for 20 minutes. This was Borg's fifth consecutive Wimbledon title. Jimmy Connors and Brian Gottfried reached the semi finals and Roscoe Tanner was a quarter finalist.
