Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of these four players set a record for the highest batting average in a season during the 20th Century?

Answer: Nap Lajoie

Lajoie did a .426 with Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics of 1901. This 2nd baseman still banged out 14 home runs that year. What a tremendous season this was and it was untouched except by one who tied it the rest of the century.
2. Which of the following once set a record by smacking 67 doubles in a season?

Answer: Earl Webb

In 1931 Webb smacked 67 doubles for the Red Sox. He only played in 7 seasons and hit a total of 155 in his career. He also batted .333 that year.
3. Who retired with 938 stolen bases for their career?

Answer: Lou Brock

Brock stole a total of 938 bases in his career, 50 with the Cubs early in his career, and the rest with the Cardinals.
4. In 1973 Nolan Ryan struck out 383 batters to set a season record. Whose record did he break by one strikeout?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Ryan barely surpassed the great Sandy Koufax who struck out 382 batters in 1965 with the Dodgers. Ryan stuck out his last batter of the 1973 season. Koufax retired the following year due to elbow problems. Who knows what would have been.
5. Which of the following players has more runs scored in a season for a right-handed batter?

Answer: Rogers Hornsby

The others listed are left-handed batters. A strange statistic is that in the 20th Century he ranked at 22nd place for most runs scored but is in 1st for right-handed batters. Hornsby was placed so far down the list with his 156 runs scored in 1929. He did this with the Cubs 3 years after being traded by St.Louis. He also hit 39 home runs and batted .380 that year.
6. What former Red Sox player leads the team with career walks?

Answer: Ted Williams

Williams is placed 3rd on the 20th Century list for walking 2,021 times in his career. He played his entire career with the Red Sox. Yastremski walked 1845 times.
7. Of the top five career batting average leaders of the 20th Century, how many of them are right-handed hitters?

Answer: 2

There are only two right-handed batters amongst the top five. They are Rogers Hornsby in 2nd with a .3585 and Ed Delahanty with a .3459. Ty Cobb leads the pack with a .3664. Cobb was left-handed.
8. Which of the following once held the dubious honor of holding the number one and two spots in striking out the most times in a season?

Answer: Bobby Bonds

Bonds did this with the number 1 spot by striking out 189 times in 1970 which broke his own record of 187 in 1969. Preston Wilson tied the 2nd place spot by his own 187 wiffs in 2000.
9. What pitcher is in the record books for winning 59 games in 1884?

Answer: Charlie Radbourn

Radbourn won 59 games in a season with the Providence Grays and went 59-12. Pud Galvin won 46 games the same year.
10. Which of the following pitchers set a record for losing 29 games in a single season?

Answer: Vic Willis

Willis lost 29 games way back in 1905 while pitching for the Boston Beaneaters of the National League. He was sold to Pittsburgh the following year and finished 23-13, then 21-11, then 23-11, and finally 22-11 in 1909. In 1910 he was traded to St.Louis where he went 9-12. He retired after that season.
