Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Georges Vezina's 'cool' nickname?

Answer: Chicoutimi Cucumber

Georges was born in Chicoutimi, Quebec, in 1887. The 'Cucumber' part of his nickname came from his always seeming 'as cool as a cucumber' during matches.
Goobies, Poodiac, and Asbestos are all real places in Canada.
2. Georges Vezina spent his professional hockey career from 1910 onwards, as goaltender with the same team. Which team was it?

Answer: Montreal Canadiens

Georges played 16 seasons as goaltender for the Canadiens, both in the NHA and the NHL. In all that time, he was the only goaltender they employed.
3. Georges Vezina played on a Stanley Cup winning team twice during his professional career.

Answer: True

During his tenure from 1910-1925, the Canadiens made it to five Stanley Cup finals. They won in 1916 and 1924, beating the Portland Rosebuds and Calgary Tigers, respectively. Georges' wife gave birth to their youngest son while Georges was playing in the 1916 Stanley Cup final. They named him Marcel Stanley to commemorate the day.
4. Georges made his professional hockey debut on December 31, 1910. Who was his team's opponent at that match?

Answer: Ottawa Senators

Georges played in every game in his debut season with the Canadiens, and had the least number of goals scored against him of any goaltender in the league.
5. In 1918, Vezina was the first goaltender in the NHL to do which of these?

Answer: Record a shutout and get a goal assist

Georges first ever professional career shutout was during the 1912-1913 season, when the Canadiens defeated the Ottawa Senators 6-0.
6. In the 1917-1918 season, Georges Vezina set a record for the fewest shutouts needed to lead the league. Another player equalled this feat during that season. Who was he?

Answer: Clint Benedict

Clint Benedict played for the Ottawa Senators in the 1917-18 season. He was nicknamed "Praying Benny" by the press and fans, as he was the first goaltender to habitually fall to his knees on the ice, and use his shin pads to block a goal. Because this was technically foul play at that time, he would fold his hands and pray whilst on his knees. Eventually, NHL rules were changed to allow goaltenders to use their pads to block the puck.
7. In 1945, Georges was one of the first 12 players to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Which of these players was not inducted alongside him, in that first dozen honoured members?

Answer: Bill Gadsby

Bill Gadsby is an inductee of the Hall of Fame, but he was honoured in 1970.
Georges was the first of only 29 goaltenders to be inducted during the 20th century.
8. In 1926, several untrue 'facts' were reported about Vezina in the sports press. Which of these was not one of them?

Answer: His wife was an Inuit princess

Shortly after Georges death, the then manager of the Canadiens, Leo Dandurand, was quoted as saying "Georges Vezina speaks no English and has 22 children, including three sets of triplets, and they were all born in the space of nine years." In actual fact, he had two sons and could speak a little English, although French was his first language.
9. During a game in November 1925, Georges was forced to abandon his post when he was too ill to continue. The next day, he was diagnosed with the disease that would kill him. What was the disease?

Answer: Tuberculosis

Georges kept a clean sheet throughout the first half of that last match, only agreeing to seek medical attention when he began coughing up blood during the halftime break. He died in March 1926, back in his home town of Chicoutimi.
10. The Vezina Trophy was inaugurated in the 1926-27 season, and awarded to the goaltender who allowed the fewest goals to be scored against his team during the season. Who won it in its first year?

Answer: George Hainsworth

George Hainsworth was the new goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens, so it was perhaps fitting that he won the Vezina Trophy in honour of his predecessor. Hainsworth won the trophy three seasons running, from 1927-29.
