Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the vehicle that takes the field before home games?

Answer: Ramblin' Wreck

The Ramblin' Wreck is a 1930 Ford Model A Sport coupe. It ushers the team and cheerleaders onto the field prior to home games, and it has made appearances at away games. The Wreck, along with Buzz, is a mascot of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
2. What school did Georgia Tech defeat 222-0 in 1916?

Answer: Cumberland College

This record-setting onslaught was coached by John Heisman. There was not a single pass thrown by Georgia Tech, but there were 32 rushing touchdowns made. Tech scored on every single drive.
3. In what city do the Yellow Jackets play their home games?

Answer: Atlanta

The University of Georgia Bulldogs play in Athens, and they are the Jackets' fiercest rival. The Georgia Institute of Technology is located in downtown Atlanta on North Avenue. Because of this location and its status as an engineering school, rival schools often call it the North Avenue Trade School. Georgia Tech can take a joke and sells merchandise sporting the false moniker.
4. After whom is Tech's football stadium named?

Answer: Bobby Dodd

Bobby Dodd Stadium was so named in 1988 in honor of the superb Georgia Tech football coach. Dodd led the Jackets to an overall record of 165-64-8, and he coached one of their four national title winning teams.
5. No college football game is complete without a band. Founded in 1908, what is the name of the Georgia Tech marching band?

Answer: Yellow Jacket Marching Band

Although Tech teams have been known as Blacksmiths, Engineers, and the Golden Tornado, the band fittingly has the same name as the official team name. Humorously, if one plays with words, the band's name is not dissimilar to the University of Georgia's Red Coat Marching Band.
6. In what year did Georgia Tech win its third Atlantic Coast Conference title (until it was vacated in 2011)?

Answer: 2009

Under Coach Paul Johnson, the Yellow Jackets rallied to a 10-2 record to lead the ACC Coastal division. They went on to face the Clemson Tigers, whom they'd beaten earlier in the year. They managed to top them again 39-34 to win the conference title and move on to the Orange Bowl, where they were beaten by the Iowa Hawkeyes 24-14.

In 2011, the Yellow Jackets lost this title as punishment for not cooperating with the NCAA in their investigation to the eligibility of a player that played in said season.

He had received some 300 dollars in gifts, which is against the NCAA's rules. Tech said that they did in fact cooperate and did not appreciate the punishment. I can't say I do either.
7. In what year did the Yellow Jackets leave the Southeastern Conference?

Answer: 1963

Bobby Dodd's decision to withdraw from the SEC came from a feud with the University of Alabama coach, Bear Bryant, along with various practices he didn't like in the SEC. From there, Georgia Tech remained an independent school until they joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1978. Tech won its third national title in 1952, and its fourth in 1990.
8. What has Georgia Tech's rivalry with the University of Georgia become colloquially known as?

Answer: Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate

The Tech-UGA rivalry is taken very seriously by some fans, particularly students. The schools tend to volley insults at each other on a regular basis. Tech students generally rely on their school's academic prestige, where UGA tends to make jokes about Tech's lopsided male to female ratio. UGA also has its considerable lead in the overall rivalry record to boast. 'The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry' is the name of the rivalry between UGA and Auburn University. 'The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party' is the name of the rivalry between UGA and the University of Florida.
9. Which of these Yellow Jackets was the second overall pick in the 2007 National Football League Draft?

Answer: Calvin Johnson

Johnson was an All-American at Tech, and he remains one of the most impressive receivers the school has seen. He put up a career 2927 receiving yards. Ball was his quarterback, but he was not drafted. Dwyer was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2010. Brooking was drafted in 1998 by the Atlanta Falcons.
10. The Yellow Jackets have won a Southeastern Conference Championship.

Answer: True

They won five including two back-to-back titles the season before and the season of Tech's 1952 National Championship. Despite leaving the conference, the Yellow Jackets maintained rivalries with SEC teams such as Auburn and UGA. The Auburn rivalry slowed over the years and stopped being an annual meeting in the 1980s, but the Tech-UGA rivalry is as bitter as ever.
