Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gloucester RFC played at which home ground in 2008?

Answer: Kingsholm

Often referred to in the popular press as 'Fortress Kingsholm'. Welford Road is Leicester's ground and the Recreation Ground (usually shortened to 'The Rec') belonged to Gloucester's big West country rivals, Bath. The Madejski Stadium hosts London Irish's home games as well as being the home ground for the football (soccer) club, Reading.
2. Which Gloucester player represented England at fullback from 1960-1967?

Answer: Don Rutherford

'The Don' earned 14 England caps, and went on to become director of rugby for the RFU (Rugby Football Union). The other choices were also England fullbacks. Bob Hiller played for England from 1968-1972, Dusty Hare played in the 1970s, and Marcus Rose in the 1980s. Hiller and Rose were both Harlequins players in their era, and Hare was from Leicester.
3. Mike Burton played for Gloucester and England in the 1970s at which position?

Answer: Prop

Mike gained the dubious distinction of becoming the first Englishman to be sent off (in 1975) in an international match during England's tour of Australia. After retiring, he built up a successful business specialising in corporate hospitality, sports travel packages, and player management.
4. What name was given to the area of Gloucester's 2008 home ground which has standing terraces only?

Answer: The Shed

Occupied by the 'shedheads', Gloucester's most die-hard fans. The club is considering redevelopment of the area, but have had to agree to keep the standing terraces. Opposition teams are supposed to be so intimidated by the noise, it gives the home team a head start.
5. All the following players played in the position of flanker, but which one was the Gloucester RFC star?

Answer: Mike Teague

Mike Teague played for England from 1985-1993, earning 27 caps and scoring three tries. He was also a successful British Lion. Mickey Skinner and Peter Winterbottom were contempories, playing for England from 1998-1992 and 1982-1993, respectively. Skinner was a Harlequins player and Winterbottom played for Headingley. Neil Back was a Leicester star from the next era, playing for England betwwen 1994 and 2003.
6. Gloucester provided two props in England's 2003 Rugby World Cup victory. Phil Vickery was one. Who was the other?

Answer: Trevor Woodman

Graham Rowntree was a Leicester player and missed out on selection in 2003. White and Leonard were both in the squad, with White playing for Leicester at the time, and Leonard for Harlequins. The two Gloucester players started the final, with Leonard coming on to replace Woodman. Trevor played for Gloucester from 1996 to 2004 before joining Sale, but was forced into an early retirement in 2005 due to a back injury.
7. Gloucester's flying winger, James Simpson-Daniel, is known by which nickname?

Answer: Sinbad

'Sinbad' joined the club in 2000, straight from school. He has earned 10 England caps, but his career has been blighted by numerous injuries.
8. Gloucester RFC played in which colours in 2008?

Their nickname is the slightly unimaginative 'Cherry and Whites'. Black and yellow are, rather predictably, the colours of Wasps. Bath played in blue/black and white, and London Irish were green and white.
9. Phil Vickery left Gloucester in 2006 to move to which club?

Answer: Wasps

Nicknamed 'Raging Bull', Phil played for Gloucester from 1995 until he left for Wasps. He played in all seven games of England's successful 2003 World Cup campaign, and was still an England player in 2009.
