Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When your group reaches the putting green, who should putt last?

Answer: The person who is closest to the hole

This is one reason why you should use a ball marker. If your ball is in the way of the person who is putting first, use a ball marker so you know where your ball was, otherwise your ball might get hit.
2. What is an albatross in golf?

Answer: A score of three below par

A birdie is one below par, an eagle is two below par and an albatross is three below par. Golfers must really love birds! Albatrosses are a rare score and only very good players ever get them.
3. When was golf first played in the Olympics?

Answer: 1900

The four participating golf nations in 1900 were France, Great Britain, Greece and the United States. For the men, the gold medallist was Charles Sands from the United States. Silver was Walter Rutherford from Great Britain, and bronze was David Robertson from Great Britain. For the women, the gold medal went to Margaret Abbott. The silver went to Pauline Whittier, and bronze went to Daria Pratt, all from the USA. Golf was in the 1900 and the 1904 Olympic Games before it was canceled.
It was re-introduced as an Olympic sport 112 years later at the 2016 Rio games.
4. What do you call a score of one above par?

Answer: Bogey

Four above par is a quadruple bogey, three above par is a triple bogey, two above par is a double bogey, and one above par is a bogey. A bunker is a sand trap and a hazard is one of many things including water hazards, bunkers, and roughs.
5. What is a caddy?

Answer: A person who carries a golfer's kit and hands them their clubs

Every professional golfer needs to have a caddy. A caddy must have good knowledge of golf and must provide good moral support. He must provide helpful hints and pass the golfer anything in his kit when asked.
6. Penalties should try to be avoided at all times. Which of the following will not result in a penalty to your score?

Answer: Hitting the ball into the sand bunker

Hitting your ball out of bounds will result in a one stroke penalty towards your score. Hitting an opponent's ball with your ball while putting will result in a two stroke penalty, and swinging at an opponent's ball will also result in a two stroke penalty.
7. If one player tees off with the following four clubs and hits them all well, which club would make the ball go further?

Answer: Driver

A driver is the biggest club in a golf kit. It hits the ball far, but it can sometimes make the ball stray off course while it is in the air. A putter would be nearly impossible to tee off with.
8. Oh no! You've hit the ball into the sand bunker. Which club should you use to hit the ball out of that annoying hazard?

Answer: Sand wedge

Hitting a ball out of the bunker can be one of the hardest and most frustrating shots in golf. You need to hit just the right amount of sand and ball for the ball to leave the sand. There is more wrist involved in the shot then teeing off or playing from the fairway and landing the ball in the right spot after the shot is essential.
A typical sand wedge has a loft of about 55 to 56 degrees, although they can range from anywhere between 54 to 58 degrees. It is normally the heaviest iron in a kit, weighing around 40 ounces (1.1 kg).
9. What is the maximum number of clubs one professional golfer can carry?

Answer: 14 clubs

Make sure you have 14 clubs or less in your kit or you could be disqualified. It does not matter what clubs you choose, however, they must fit in with the rules of golf.
10. You are about to tee off, and before somebody behind you sneezes. You turn around to tell them to get a tissue, while somebody behind you secretly swaps your ball for a different one without you knowing. Finally, the person uses a tissue, and you can do your swing. As you hit the ball, it shatters into tiny pieces. Everyone around you laughs and you can't resist a chuckle yourself. "Oh no!" Somebody says. "You've got a breakaway!" What is a breakaway?

Answer: Trick ball designed to shatter when hit

There are many other types of golf balls, like ones that explode, ones that make streamers fly out, or ones that move unpredictably off course when putted. Some courses do not let you use trick balls, and they are against the rules.
