Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After playing 13 seasons with the Saints, which kicker in his first season as a Falcon, set a NFL record for booting eight field goals of 50+ yards in a season?

Answer: Morten Andersen

The other kickers never played for the Saints or Falcons. That 1995 season in Atlanta was Andersen's biggest scoring season with 122 points. He played with the Falcons for six seasons before becoming a New York Giant, then two seasons as a Chief, retiring in 2003 with an astounding 502 career field goals.
2. In 1969, I was a rookie with the Jets. I set a record for kicking a 98-yard punt against the Denver Broncos. Who am I?

Answer: Steve O'Neal

The others listed were all linebackers. O'Neal played for only five seasons in the NFL, and retired as a Saint in 1973.
3. This kicker led the NFL in scoring in 1986. He set many records, only because of his style of kicking which was barefoot. He went to two Super Bowls with the Eagles and Patriots, but lost them both. Who was he?

Answer: Tony Franklin

The others never played for the Eagles or Patriots and were not barefoot kickers. Franklin booted for nine seasons from 1980-1988. He lost Super Bowl XV to the Raiders, and lost Super Bowl XX to the Bears. Four seasons with the Eagles, four with the Patriots, then one with the Dolphins, Tony amassed 767 points.
4. From 1996-2003, every one of my Patriot seasons saw me score over 100 points, and I had four seasons of being perfect with my PATs. Who am I?

Answer: Adam Vinatieri

The others never played for the Patriots. Although Vinatieri never made a Pro Bowl, he had eight consecutive seasons of hitting the century mark. His highest point total came in 1998 when he kicked 125 points. He went to three Super Bowls, losing to Green Bay in XXXI, won in XXXVI against the Rams, and won another against the Carolina Panthers.
5. I was an offensive tackle, but most fans remember me for my leg. I played for 21 seasons and was a Cleveland Brown. In 1953, I kicked 23 of 26 field goals while the rest of the league combined for only 85. I was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1974. Who am I?

Answer: Lou Groza

The other kickers would not play in the NFL for at least another 30 years after Lou had his stellar 1953 season. When Groza retired in 1973, he had played longer than any other NFL player with 21 seasons under his helmet. Lou had the nickname, 'The Toe', and when he retired, he had amassed an amazing 1608 points which made him the NFLs top scorer.
6. This kicker was put in the Hall of Fame mainly as a defensive back, but his leg led the NFL in punting three times. He played for 11 seasons, all with the Lions, and was a nine-time Pro Bowler. Who was this kicker?

Answer: Yale Lary

The others were all running backs and never played for the Lions. Lary's NFL punting career average when he retired was third best with 44.3 yards per kick. Yale wore the Lion's uniform from 1952-1964, missing the '54 and '55 NFL seasons.
7. In 1973, I led the NFL with 130 points with 30 field goals as a Ram. I was in my fourth full season, and had compiled 445 career points. Then in 1974, the NFL moved the goal posts back to the rear of the end zone. I then made only 9 of 16. I was out of the NFL by 1975. Who am I?

Answer: David Ray

The other kickers never played for the Rams and did not play in the 1970s. Ray was not the only kicker who shined until the goal posts were moved back in 1974. Many other kicking greats went downhill from that point also.
8. This field goal kicker retired after the 1979 season as the number one scoring foot in football history. In Super Bowl III, it was his foot that kicked three field goals and a PAT for the Jets, giving New York the margin of victory. Who was he?

Answer: Jim Turner

Although the others listed were quarterbacks, none played for the Jets. Turner's greatest seasons were the '68 and '69 season when he scored 274 points and kicked 66 field goals. Jim also played for nine seasons with the Broncos.
9. From 1962-1967, the Denver Broncos led the league in punting, five of the six seasons. Two different punters helped the Broncos in that department. One punter was Bob Scarpitto. Who was the other?

Answer: Jim Fraser

The other kickers listed didn't play in the 1960s, and began their careers in the 1980s. Fraser was a linebacker drafted from Wisconsin. He led the league three seasons in a row. He then was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs. Scarpitto was a wide receiver from Notre Dame and led the league twice. Though shining in Denver, neither punter accomplished much elsewhere after leaving the Denver air.
10. Which of the following legs retired with over 500 field goals kicked?

Answer: Gary Anderson

From 1982-2003, Anderson played mostly for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but put in many seasons with the Vikings also. His 520 field goals was far above the others listed, who never even reached the 300 plateau. In Anderson's entire 22-season career, he attempted 790 PATs, and missed only seven.
