Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many games in the 2003 finals ended with a score of 3-0?

Answer: 3

The first, second, and seventh game ended 3-0, each with New Jersey winning.
2. With Anaheim already down 2-0 in the series, game three went into overtime. Anaheim's Adam Oates won a faceoff in the Devil's zone and sent the puck to Ruslan Salei, who fired it in past Martin Brodeur for the winner. The question is, who lost that draw?

Answer: Pascal Rheaume

Right before the puck was dropped, Rheaume jumped the gun, so to speak, and showed Oates what his move was going to be. When the puck was dropped, Oates knew what to do and won the faceoff cleanly.
3. After the 2003 finals, who had played more playoff games without winning a Stanley Cup, Steve Thomas or Adam Oates?

Answer: Steve Thomas

Thomas had played 168 playoff games, while Oates was close behind with 163. The two were second and third all time, behind Dale Hunter, who played 186 games without a Cup before retiring following the 1999 playoffs.
4. Which of these Devils players did not sport a playoff beard during the 2003 finals?

Answer: Patrik Elias

The beard is a playoff tradition, but mostly among North American players.
5. Who was a healthy scratch for the Devils during the first six games of the finals, only to return to the lineup for game seven?

Answer: Ken Daneyko

Daneyko did not play a lot of minutes in game seven, but the career Devil was certainly worthy of playing in the game. It would prove to be Daneyko's last NHL game, as he retired a few weeks later.
6. Who was the rookie who picked up 3 points in game seven?

Answer: Mike Rupp

Rupp picked up a goal and two assists in game seven, tying a shared record for most points in a game seven.
7. Five Devils players had been on the team for all three of their Stanley Cup championships up to 2003. Which one of these players was not one of them?

Answer: Tommy Albelin

Albelin was on the 1995 team and the 2003 team, but was in Calgary for the Devils' 2000 championship. Brylin did play on all three teams, but was occasionally in the AHL during the span between Cups. The other two were Scott Stevens and Ken Daneyko.
8. Which of these statements is true about the 2003 finals?

Answer: Game 3 was the first Stanley Cup Finals game won by a Californian team in California.

California saw its 2nd Stanley Cup Finals in 2003. The Kings went to the finals in 1993, but lost in five games to the Canadiens, and won their only game in Montreal. In 2003, Anaheim won games 3, 4 and 6, all at home. The team that scored first won every game except game 5, when the Ducks scored early on but lost 6-3.

The Ducks were incredible in OT, but did not come close to the 1993 Canadiens, who won 10 games in overtime. Stevens was the Devils' captain, so of course he hoisted the Cup first.
9. Which of these players made his Stanley Cup Finals debut in 2003?

Answer: Jeff Friesen

Friesen played for the Sharks and Ducks prior to 2002-2003, when he went to the Devils and made his first appearence in the Finals, against the team he had just left. Oates made his first appearance with the Capitals in 1998, when Washington was swept by the Red Wings. Gomez was on the Devils when they won the Cup in 2000. Rob Niedermayer had been to the Finals once before with the Florida Panthers in 1996, when they were swept by the Avalanche.
10. Scott and Rob Niedermayer's mother was open about which of her two sons she was rooting for in the finals. Which one was it?

Answer: Rob

She was rooting for Rob because Scott already had two championships in his career, while Rob had none. Scott ended up winning a third, but you can bet that he won't be bringing the Cup to the 2003 Niedermayer family get-together.
